dynolicious
talking about the iphone app not the rapper...anyone tried it? it seems a bit sketchy that it can calculate HP without having any connection to the crank/wheels but hey, technology is pretty amazing these days.

btw i did do a search for it in the forums, came across 1 poster that said it was close to his dyno results...but looking for more than just 1 experience though..
Its pretty much the same thing as a GTEC Pro. The program is only as good as the parameters you give it and its ability to reproduce the number is only as good as the surface you choose to do your testing and how good of a driver you are a repeating your desired results. Its like going to the track and never learning to launch with a 10 second car. You can only get it to go 15seconds in the 1320 but it truely is a 10 second car. The program needs very accurate information about the vehicle and to be mounted very securely to the vehicle in a level horizontal field. The road needs to be flat and level if doing 1/4 and HP checks. In the end, its still just a rough estimate that can be grossly skewed at the end of the day by any of the above points. Other than that, its a good program.
My guess is that it uses the accelerometer to calculate horsepower. It can figure out how fast you're going, and based on the accelerometer reading, it can calculate the horsepower produced at that speed (power = force*velocity). As stated, it's only as good as the input parameters and the mounting, and I doubt that the accelerometer is very accurate.
How does it manage drag though? Does it ask you to do a coast-down first, or do you give it a value?

Dont mean to beat a dead horse, or whatever, but I just purchased the application based on some 1st hand experience and some research, its supposed to be fairly accurate, for example, on the dyno, a car pulled 160 whp, and the program estimated 157 whp. and the track time was 7 hundreths of a second off. yes there are some variables, one being the exact weight of the car must be inputed, or a very close estimate, and then there the mounting orientation and location. It must be pointed forward and must be very firmly held in place, but there are solutions to this like a 30 accessory from the mall that sticks to the windshield via a sucker, its fairly firm, and can be adjusted to hold the phone in whatever position you want it to. Im my gsr (Stock except some weight reduction) I ran consistantly around 15.5 at 93mph, pulling 160 whp. Now the horsepower is a bit optimistic because I never re-weighed my car after removing a bunch of crap, and so right now its entered in as 2880 lbs with me in it. so It thinks im getting this time with more weight than i actually have, hence the optimistic horsepower reading. But! Regardless, it is darn close!
