Default Difference in b-series blocks?

hey guys. I am trying to learn the difference between a b16, b18 and b20 block. The reason why i'm confused is that you can use the same piston in a b16 and b18 but not b20. What makes a b16 a b16 and a b18 a b18? Thanks. Still trying to learn!!!

b16, b18c and b18a/b haves the same bore (81mm) but different stroke. b20's come with 84mm bore and the same stroke as a LS (89mm).

if you start looking at compression calculators, you would see the differences between them.
