Detonation or knocking.
Do either of these sound like a backfire from the engine bay. Dont really want to get into what happened but this weekend I heard a backfire type noise from the actual engine bay and not the exhaust. Its got me slightly worried so any help is appreciated.

You're asking if either detonation or knocking sound like a backfire coming from the engine bay? From what I know, knocking and pinging is caused by detonation in the cylinder other than from the spark (auto ignition), so they are basically the same thing and no, they don't sound like a backfire from the engine bay. I'm not sure what a back fire noise from the engine bay would indicate.

I am of the understanding that if you have a performance (loud) exhaust and you can hear detonation over that, you have already toasted your pistons, because there is basically no chance of hearing it.
It's probably something else.
