Crankshaft Pulley Bolt...help
I've searched the archives and there was quite a number of post regarding this subject. Having tried some of the suggestions, I still can't get the bolt to break loose on my 91 Accord. I believe the bolt is a standard right-hand thread, so it would be counterclockwise to loosen......correct? I tried a 4 ft breaker bar, made a hex tool to keep the pulley from turning (engaged hex hole and braced to ground) and leaned on the breaker bar......bolt would not break. I'm afraid that I will break the bolt. Am I loosening.....counterclockwise? Need to replace the timing belt before it lets go.....removed the top cover and there was over 3 in. of deflection, when I pushed against the side of the belt. I'm interested to see what is under the bottom cover, once I get the pulley off. Btw, how tight should the belt be? Any help is appreciated. Joe
There is a special tool made to hold the pulley in place as you break loose the crank bolt. I forget what the exact name is, but if you flag down a tool truck (ie. snap-on, MAC, Matco, etc.) tell them what you need and you can buy it from them. It costs about $65 or something.
I use that tool pretty frequently and it saves TONS of time.
You don't need a special account to buy from the tool trucks. Also, don't trust any of the smaller tool trucks (ie. professional tool co., jimmy's tool's, etc..)

Well since you say you made a hex shape tool that holds the pulley in place then you would not need the pulley tool that the **** nuggets were talking about since they didnt read your post and failed to realize you already have a make shift crank pulley tool. Sorry, but now to the point. Yes the bolt is counter clockwise. I would get some stuff called PB blaster and soak the **** outta the bolt. Then get the biggest bar you can get and put as much force on it as possible. Dont worry about breaking the bolt. Your breaker bar will break before it will. The same thing happend to me on a 94 accord and i used the jack handle and all my strength and it finally broke loose. Good luck. You got that **** dude. Eat your wheaties
Thats not his problem. He says he has a tool to lock it into place against the ground, which should be fine. Yes, that bolt is a standard thread, so counterclockwise will unscrew it. I could not for the life of me get it off and I had basically the same setup. I even tried torching it for a while and then doing it. Eventually gave up, drove it to my local muffler shop and gave em $15 to use the acetylin torch on it and their air gun. Took it right out! Had them reassemble it by hand so I could drive home. Once I was home I got the bolt right out with a normal 1/2" ratchet.

I know that you probably have tried something similar to this, but this was the only thing that helped me.
I dont have any other suggestions, but try this tool, it may help
