Coil Over Springs?

Coil Over Springs?
Can anyone tell me what the advantages are for using Coil Over springs as opposed to just putting lowering springs and struts on? I am asking this for my friend he has a 95 civic LX that he is planning on lowering, Does anyone have any recommendations?
