Default Cleaning Valve Seats

I was just wondering if there is a correct way to clean valve seats. A couple months ago I thought I had a bent valve, when I took the head off and did the brake cleaner test I found which valve it was. I replaced the valve but it still leaked. Next thing I did was clean the valve seat with some really fine sand paper and change out the valve spring. One of these two things fixed it. Could a valve spring really go bad or was it my cleaning that helped.

What would be a cheap upgrade for valve springs on a B16A1, keep in mind it currently has single springs for both intake and exhaust. I have 3/4ths of a set of springs for a GSR too if I could use those. Thanks

yes you can use gsr springs, i would also upgrade to gsr retainers.
when you cleaned it was it a lot of carbon buildup in there?

Are you sure that there is not a dual spring setup on the intake side? I am using ITR springs on my B16 head.

Can you provide some info on this?

No there wasn't a noticable amount of carbon build up. I was just wondering if cleaning the seat was a common thing to do when doing head work.

I'm not sure if I have dual intake springs, I've only taken off my exhaust springs. I'll have to check into that.

The "brake cleaner" test is just where you tip the head on it's side, spray brake cleaner down the ports towards the top of valve head, while doing this watch the bottom of the head to see if the brake cleaner leaks out. If a valve is not sealing because it is bent or something, you'll be able to see the brake cleaner running out.

go to the local parts store and buy a valve lapper and lapping compound. sandpaper on the seat is a no-no. take the head apart and lap the valves into the seat. after lapping the valves, check the valves for any leaks by adding a thin fluid (brake fluid, antifreeze etc) into the runners to see if liquid seeps through.

EZ does it!
