Default checking timing

Without the lower timing belt cover and the mark to use as a reference, is it possibile to check timing? I've got a craftsman timing light that is adjustable. Do you have to have that mark on the cover, or is it possible to use an adjustable gun without it?

Nope, you need the cover because it has the TDC mark on it.

Don't you point the gun at the mark on the crank pulley ? Didn't know the mark on the plastic cover had anything to do with a timing gun....

<---X2, who's never actually used a timing gun.
