Default car keeps dying?..

my car started acting up today when i started it up. once i turned on my headlights my car died on me. Then it wouldnt even go on the on position.. my car was completely dead. after a few minutes i started it up again and drove it around the block and when i went to neutral to stop it died again. any help would greatly be appreciated.

also i painted my cluster bulbs red today with transparent paint. could i have a short out in the cluster that would cause this? thanks..

forgot to mention my starter would grind and make my car hesitate at startup sometimes. would a fouled out starter cause me to have absolutely no power? thanks again for any help.

most of the time, that happens theres a problem with the alternator. when it hesitates, usually the power is not recharging.

Something with the alt, battery or starter went out or you have a bad ground.

yea it was a bad ground from the battery to the engine bay ground. i cleaned the dirt off and i sanded the paint down to metal so the ground would be good. thanks for all the replies
