Default Car chokes after hitting VTEC. wtf?

my friend's hatch has a weird problem, when we try to drive his car hard.. when he hits the vtec point the car suddenly chokes as if it is lacking fuel or something. that happens every after 7000 rpm, the hatch has B16A swap on it, using stock ECU, ported and polished head, CTR cams, CTR pistons. we tried using a rechipped box to see if it will get fixed.. it still doesnt, we also tried using my stock ECU, still the same ****. our mechanic tested various parts to check if they could be the one causing the problem, we replaced the spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter and checked the fuel lines.. still no good thing.. when he tried having the car checked while on the lift they tried to see if some thing was causing the fuel to get choked in someway, checked all the lines. all was pretty good.

when he got the car back, he tried running it again, the weird thing was, after it hit the crossover point the car didn't choke this time. WTF!? we thought it was already fixed. but come the next day, the problem came back. this is some really shitty problem, hope to hear your inputs guys.. thanks!

hook it up to a wideband to see how your A/F lools like. checked the plugs after a hard run?
back off timing a little on high rpms with that high comp.

EEK!!! that sounds so nasty! it sounds just like my CBR 900RR did when it was getting real low on gas. so you have a new fuel pump, what else could it be? fuel filter, bad pump from factory, or god forbid clogged injectors. could use it as an excuse to do a full fuel system upgrade

Mine used to do that, it ended up being my Greddy header. Switched it out to a JDM ITR 4-1, and it hasn't done it since.

but why? there has to be a reason for it. On my CBR when i switched out the stock exhaust to a Full Exhaust system, it did that until i richen up the A/F mixture. perhaps with the extras (intake, exhaust etc.) its leaning out your motor to its limits. once you hit Vtec and it goes over the edge and runs way too lean.

wide band

for people saying changing exhaust and header fixed it - makes no sense unless you had a leak or some thing - check his cat might be clogged just an idea

could be, but if it was it would make the A/F ratio richer.
at the very least go get a A/F gauge and see if its running really rich or really lean. $50
