Default Cam gear alignment issues: How to line them up

Soooo... I am using skunk 2 pro1 cams with skunk 2 pro series cam gears. I have a tool to lock them in but I can’t seem to fit it with the cam gear marks perfectly up. I have to 2 center marks aligned but it looks like the top marks are both slightly inward. Here’s a picture to see

Have you milled the head or block?

Looks like about a tooth each side on the 12 o’clock marks

Maybe flip it over and see if the window aligns with the marks, although I am not sure what you expected from a cheap azz $5 tool made in China. Also, they make them for many applications... are you SURE this is the correct tool ???

I thought of that too. I thought it would be a universal good tool but guessing not.

Anyone know a way to lock the cam gears in place. The tool is trash and I have s2 pro 1 cams so there are no holes to lock.

I've not used it on any of my Honda's, but I've always used this lock tool:
Amazon Amazon

Probably 30-40$ if bought offline.

Can you see the middle lines through the hole in the tool ??? If not, it may simply be that you haven't properly set the cam gears before you installed the positioning tool. If you can see the marks in the hole, the tool you have is definitely garbage. In that case, look here:

This is the tool that I use when necessary and it works great.

just isn’t right. The top dash marks aren’t near tdc. Must be the tool.

Default Cam timing

ok so I’ve been having trouble timing my cam gears. It’s hard to lock the cams without them moving a bit. Every time I would align the middle marks the top dashes wouldn’t line up. So I’ve read up that you have to make sure that the middle dash marks and outter dash marks are aligned with the cam timing cover. Here’s a picture of the best I am able to get it. It looks pretty good. What’s your guys opinion.

adjust the intake cam gear back (clockwise) to tighten the tension of the timing belt. The intake side mark (inner) is usually higher than the exhaust mark.

Now without moving the cam gears (they appear to be at TDC), take a pic of the crank pulley where the white timing mark and the lower timing cover pointer are to see if you are in fact in mechanical time.

Yes the crank-pulley mark is in time.

Restarting this thread.. I’m getting ready to finish the car, crank pully is in time, timing belt is all on just want to make sure my cams are good. The middle mark on the cover is lined up with the two middle dots of cam gears. The outside marks aren’t directly level with the deck of the head and there’s no way I would be able to line them up and have the middle still meet. Am I ok with this?

Don't try to over-complicate this boostedblue23. The markings that have been referred to in this post are from stock cam gears. Aftermarket cam gears like you have can have slightly different markings and may not appear to align like stock gears... but the basic premise here for the alignment is simply that all four dots/marks would pass through an imaginary line that is parallel to the top edge of the cylinder head. First, rotate the crank so that the TDC mark at the cam sprocket aligns with the pointer on the oil pump (or the white TDC mark on the crank pulley aligns with the raised pointer tab on the lower timing cover. Then, use a ruler and place it between the front outer dot and the rear outer dot. If the ruler appears to be parallel to the top edge of the cylinder head, then look to see that the two middle marks close to each other are also aligned with the edge of the ruler between the outer marks. If either mark is approximately one tooth (or more) above or below the edge of the ruler... your cam gears are not in proper phase with each other and thus, not in proper time. If the marks are off SLIGHTLY, it could simply be due to a stretched timing belt, improper timing belt tension, a non-stock thickness head gasket, a milled cylinder head/block or simply improper markings on the gears themselves... just to name a few.

with a straightedge across it looks to all line up but with the tilt of the engine I can’t really judge if it should be completely straight or go on a little angle with the tilt. When the valve cover is on both outter dots are right under the corners of the cover.

Also the holes on the cam rails looks to be even with the holes in the cam.. I can fit Allen key into them. I think I’m good. I just want to be perfect and have no problems.!

If you are referring to the pics that you posted on the 25th... yes, I saw them and the marks all appear to be in the proper place.
