broken timing belt?
Hey guys, I just registered here but I've been reading the posts for awhile. I have a 96 Prelude VTEC and two days ago I started my car and it seemed fine. I drove about a mile roundtrip to pick my brother up from school. When I got back I turned off the car and a few minutes later I had to go somewhere else. However, when I turned the key the engine would started but idled really rough then died on me. I tried again and it won't start. I got a mechanic to come by and take a look at my car and he says that my timing belt is most likely broken. That's something I hoped I wouldn't hear. Well, if my belt broke while I was driving wouldnt I have heard it? Also, I'd think that the car would die on me in the middle of the street but when I was driving it, it still had plenty of power and idled as smooth as ever. So I'm not sure about the timing belt. If it is broken, I've heard that the engine would crank really fast but never start. My car doesn't crank that fast and I'm really confused now. Btw, I have about 53,000 miles on the car. Sorry for the long post guys but any help would be appreciated.
I doubt your t-belt is broken- however- take your oil cap off- have someone crank it while you look inside with a flashlight- if the cam moves, your belt is not broken. However that doesn't necessarily mean all is well with the belt. Do you have spark?
