My cam seal started leaking so I decided to replace it. I set the engine to TDC. Took off the valve cover. Took off the timing belt. Took off the cam gear. Replaced the seal. Installed the cam gear back and the timing belt. Adjusted the timing belt (3 teeth method). I cranked the car up and the oil leak stopped but now there is this extremely loud squealing noise coming from the timing belt side of the engine. It is constant. I have the upper timing belt cover removed and after about 3 minutes of the car idling, I see smoke raising from the lower timing belt cover. There are no oil leaks and no coolant leaks. I readjusted the timing belt twice and the problem is still there. Could I have tighten the cam gear too much? i don't see how that could be a problem but I can't think of anything else.

Check you timing belt install. Sounds like it is rubbing something. Check the tensioner and the cover

 

yea bro do what dominate9 said and check that tensioner... the way your describing it sounds like the tensioner is siezed or something...mabey a lil overtighten???

 

The tensioner is a manual tensioner and I've tried it loose and tight...the noise is still there. And what do you think could be rubbing to cause a squealing noise?

 

probably the belt rubbing something... look to see where the dust is building up

 

Take off the lower tb cover. It sounds like something fell in there.

 

yeah man take off the lower tbelt cover and check out whats going on...if it rubbing somewhere enough to cause smoke that means that it is eventually gonna rub till the belt breaks...and that means bye bye valves...and maybe even worse, end up messing up ur piston or cylinder wall...fix the problem before the worst happens...if the car was not making the noise before u installed the tbelt its obvious that something happened during the install...are u sure u ordered the right size belt?

 

I bit the bullet and tore everything down. Seems like I tightened the manual tensioner too much and forced the washer that I had separating the pullies into one of the pullies. So that squealing sound was metal to metal contact. Fortunately, it was a successful fix. Thanks guys.
