Default Bolt Stretch

In order to measure for bearing thickness you must torque the rod bolts to the correct bolt stretch. However once the bolt is stretched once untorqued will the bolt return to its original length ? Then how do we retorque the rod bolts.

Also with main bolts or studs is the only method of torquing using a torque wrench ?

measure the length of the bolt before hand with the guage... put it on to check clearances then torque it once to the factory/correct spec then check your clearances.... then put the stretch guage back on and go on with your stretching

correct me if im wrong but thats how i've done it and have not had problems

If your rod bolt does not return to the size it was before torquing, throw it away - it's been overtorqued.

Well then what is the deal with keeping a log of their size and stretch ?

So your saying it should return to their original size though ? Also when retorqued, I know we are not going by this should the torque that you are going to be the same as previously torqued ?

This is all for rod bolts though. What about the mains ?
