when one side of the tire weighs more then the other you gotta counter balance the weight or the tire wil just bounce when driving at a high rate of speed ... no tire is perfectly round even when they are now so it is always nessary to balance them when you buy new tires

Unbalanced wheels will cause vibration. If they are on the front, you will feel it in the steering wheel, usually above 40 mph. On the rear, it is less noticeable, you feel it more in the seat of your pants. Wheels are balanced on a machine that spins the wheels and then tells the operator where to put the weight and how much weight is required. There are weights that clip on to the outer lip of the wheel, and there are tape weights that attach to the inner portion of the wheel (for custom wheels, many of which don't have a lip for conventional wheel weights).
