B16 & B18 Q
I am wondering if there are advantages and disadvantages of either block. I was planning on looking for a B18A1 Block Sleeved and bored to 84 or 84.5mm. But recently just found a B16 block that would work just as well.....i think.
I am wondering how does a sleeved b16 compare to a sleeved b18?
Are the rod lengths the same?
Can I use hosing from my b18 on the b16 then?
Can I use other things off the b18 block for the b16?
Let me know if you need more info.....I am just seeing what I would be able to do if I bought the block but....I don't know yet if the block is b16a or b16b will this matter?

disadvantages of B16 = no torque
advantages of B16 = cheaper than B18C and better gear ratio..thats about it...lol...but about as much as a B18B LS engine.
disadvantages of B18 = cost more than a B16
advantages of B18 (& B20) = good amount of torque & overall HP over B16, especially B18C-R and B20/LS/VTEC if you build it with reliability in mind.
Overboring a B16 will barely touch the powerband of an overbored B18. You're always going to make more power with a B18 block & VTEC head setup.
I am wondering how does a sleeved b16 compare to a sleeved b18?
For one, there's no replacment for displacement; you'll always be short of HP if you choose a B16 over B18 blocks whether you overbore or not.
Are the rod lengths the same?
NO. B16A rods are shorter than B18 rods.
Can I use hosing from my b18 on the b16 then?
Depends, but most of them you can.
Can I use other things off the b18 block for the b16?
Depends, but if you were more specific it would help give you a better answer.

I would have to agree, the LS is a good block but the only thing that compared to any vtech series block you will have a better balance overall as the LS is not made to rev as high. Some people will argue either way but this is my opinion. Also the LS blocks do not have oil squirters in the blocks either. If you list maybe a more in depth idea of what you want to ultimately achieve with the motor that would be more of a help(ie built not built, sleeved not sleeved) I would assume that you want to go sleeve and forged internals. If this is the case I would chose the ls becasue aftermarket parts like forgred rods and pistons can be balanced and forged pistons are less sensitve to not having oil squirters all though they still will help.
Ok well here is the the thing. I was going to do and ls/vtec turbo setup w/ the ls block being sleeved and bored to 84 or 84.5. But in the quest to find a sleeved and bored b18a1, I cam upon a sleeved and bored (84) b16. I was wondering if the b16 that I have found would put out numbers like a b18a that was built exactly the same.
I already have the b16 tranny and parts for the build but was stuck on if I should continue the search for the b18 im looking for or just go with this new find...the b16.

No, because as already mentioned, there's no replacement for displacement. The B18A/B motor will definitely make more torque than a B16A no matter what same setup you do to both engines, the HP is questionable though, but the B16A will definitly be lacking in the torque dept.

the torques would not be the same but personally i would go b16 if you already have all the other items for the b16. if you want torques b18 they will put out close to the same amount of power
