Air getting in power steering system
Hi,
I have a 06 Accord V6. I removed the power steering pump to do an oil pump reseal this weekend. It's now getting air into the system and I can't figure out where from. I had the pump off 2 other times in the last month and had no issues. I changed the orings on the high pressure line and the plastic piece where the input line attaches. I replaced the spring clamp on the input hose and also tightened the clamp on the hose that connects the reservoir to the cooler. The hose connections that go into the reservoir are OK.
I'll jack the car up and turn the wheel slowly 20 times to get the air out. Within just a few minutes it's getting air into it and making noise, you can see the bubbles in the reservoir it's almost foam. I can't see it leaking anywhere and the level in the reservoir isn't dropping. The only part on the pump that's a little wet is the bottom where the part unscrews that holds a spring. I bought the car last year. The pump is a rebuilt pump but I don't know by what company. I purchased parts to rebuild from Honda just to have on hand before realizing it was already rebuilt. Should I go ahead and rebuild it? What could cause this? Could I have damaged the steering rack somehow? The Honda service manual has nothing about bleeding air in the section for replacing the pump so I didn't.

I found the problem. There were a couple small holes in a steering boot, now its leaking from there. So dirt got in, the seals were damaged and the little bit of air that got in when I changed the pump killed the seals, they would have gone out soon anyway.
