well in the sense that airfilters keep crap out of your engine they keep it performing 
you have to consider that getting a high performance or high flow airfilter is going to let more dirt through than the lower flow stockers. I'ld worry about cleaning up the air path before changing the filter, ie taking out the resonator etc.
