Default 240,260,280z v8 conversion

I absolutly love the look of the older z cars, and i would like to try an engine conversion on one. It needs to be cheap, and i was wondering how difficult it would be and how much it would cost. Im on the east coast if anyone has anything affordable. What would be the difference between somthing like an sr or rb engine type and a like a 350 (other then size clearly). Basically what is cheapest and easiest to make it faster?

I've seen a couple small block conversions and they looked pretty clean. But remember there are no cheap conversions.Cheap takes a lot of time, and friends with equipment.
