Default My Skunk 2 cam issue

I got a b16a2 wit i/e wit skunk 2 cams stage 2 wit crower valvetrain and for some reason the when ever i hit vtec 5800 it dips really low then pulls it self back up around 6600-6800 and pull hard, then last night i unplugged vtec and the motor runs alot faster im running a stock p28 chippped wit a b16 program and stock comp, when i dynoed it like 2 months ago wit a bad o2 i put down like 145 whp then made vtec engagement at a higher rpm it ran better (not much of a dip)? what are you guys running your v-tec engagement at?

Wherever your horespower and torque lines cross is a good place to set your VTEC crossover point initially. Then go from there.

I would say a couple of things are happening. One piston speed is not high enough to move enough air to make power when the big duration lobe of those skunk2 cams is engaging the rocker pad.

If you had more static compresion it would make up for the loss of dynamic compresion you experience in VTEC and you would not get that pesky little dip.

Hope that helped.

I would put the vtec point at 6000-6500 .. the cam is to big for stock cr of the motor... i had the same set up befor and had that problem untill i put the vtec point up to 6500 and then it ran alot better.....

bottom line is dyno tune your vtec engagement. 5800 is tooo low for S2S2.

HP and TQ always intersect at 5252rpm. You want to put the VTEC crossover where the tq peaks while on the small lobe.

I disagree. What is your logic behind that approach.

If you want to maximize your power through the entire rpm range do the following.

Set vtec ~7k
tune car
Set vtec ~3k
tune car
overlay both tuned power curves
select vtec as point where power curves intersect.
fine tune

If you want a huge dip in power when you engage vtec, "put the VTEC crossover where the tq peaks while on the small lobe."

from what i have heard i thought it was kinda bad to run aggressive cams without the basic 3. you are only running intake and exhaust. no headers. * correct me guys if im wrong

They will be right about the same place. This is what I have seen on every car that I've dynod.

Your engine will make tq and then start to lose it until your vtec crossover. I like my vtec to crossover right at the tq peak on the small lobe. This makes for a seemless transition.

You just loose power, which is bad, but nothing else is going to happen. I am running headers, intake, and got Skunk 1 cams and valve train in my garage ready to install on my B16. All this with OE DX civic exhaust. Talk about bottle neck, but makes for a nice sleeper when those ricers come around.
