Default Turbo vs. ubercharger?

i can't decide weather or not I want a turbo or a super charger for my '90 crx. is there really much difference? i know more about turbos then i do about super chargers (still very little).....which would be better for a crx? and......(i know this is dumb) but do superchargers make the cool noise from a blow off valve of sorts like turbos do?

lastly, what are some good websites that i can get a turbo/super charger kit for a first gen b16a from?

as always, thanks for the help

walt.

Turbo is far better IMO. It can be built to be alot more powerful than a supercharger. Supercharging will require less maintence. A supercharger does have a bov. http://www.overboost.com is a good site for turbo and stuff. But Honda-tech classifieds(forced induction section) is probally your best bet. They have good **** for sale all the time there.

Well, supercharger uses your engine's power to power itself. It works on a same concept like a turbo, except that a belt drives the supercharger's compressor wheel, while exhoust air drives the turbo compressor wheel. Because of this, supercharger gives you instant responce, at a cost of stealing LITTLE power from engine. Superchager doesn't make as loud pshhhhh noise as a turbo does, but it has a continues crying noise, hard to immitate it. :-)

What he said ^^

It's more fun, because there are things you can do with turbo, where as you can only dream with supercharger...

I vote turbo. I've only ever ridden in supercharged Civics though, so I may not be a good judge. I can say that the turbo on my Civic is fun as hell though.

Not to arugue... but an exhaust restriction robs power also. Just want to make that known. But I guess turbo is more bang for the buck. Summit has a bolt on turbonetics kit for a crx with a b16.

I am pretty sure one of the H-T sponsers can hook you up with a good deal on a turbo kit.

Don't buy a turbo for the sound, buy it for the experience.

Dude...if you just want a turbo for the "pshhh" noise then you need to start doing some research. Theres alot into having a reliable daily driven honda. Theres alot more maintenance...and alot more money involved. It might only cost $2k to piece together a nice kit...but then things are gonna start messing up. So you always have to have cash unless you want your car to sit while you get the money for a certain part. And if you really want it to stay reliable...youre gonna have to get something to control the fuel and get it tuned. You can do this with larger injectors and an vafc...but id recommend something that can get a little more detailed than that. All in all...i say stay all motor unless youre ready for alot of work and $ being blown.

But if you are ready for the responsibility...then the best advice i could give you is to go to the FI forum and read every post that you see...they might not seem very interesting...but i guarantee you will learn something new from every post. And if theres something that you dont get...search...and if you still dont get a good answer then ask the FI people. Theres always 5-6 people that have had the exact same problem that youre having at that time....so it helps alot.

dude, im 17. the "pshh" sound is MORE than enough reason to buy a turbo
also though, i'd like the performance upgrade to it, my goal is to make at least a 300 hp daily driver crx. Also, i understand all the money that goes into it, i plan on getting an edlebrock victor x, and throttle body, along with toda cam gears and cams......etc.

Easier said then done man, I'm 18 and I know that pshh is NOT enough reason. 300 hp daily driven, um.....good luck. Especially on a D-Block with no prep.

Plenty of time to research this subject on Forced Induction for the CRX. @ 17 man? You better start putting that turbo kit together junkyard style. I suggest visiting http://www.homemadeturbo.com and see the various results they have came up with. About the turbo or supercharger? I suggest going over to http://www.howstuffworks.com and looking for it. Hey? What do you know? http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question122.htm. Learn some stuff before you start dropping your money into it

Good luck. (Turbo = more net hp at higher rpms/constant maintenance, Supercharger = More umphh in lower rpms/more reliable)

true, I'm 19 almost 20 and have wanted turbo but just to expensive, espesially with me starting college now. still want one but a lsvtec is all I have in the future for now. but also I believe he's either running or gonna be running a 1st gen B16. oh and working fast food DEFINETLY!!!! doesn't make enough money to run a turbo. or do much to your car at all if it likes to break down like mine. trust me I tried to 2 years.

Exactly, Im in the same boat as you haha. Im 19 also and turning 20 next year. I'm just rebuilding a d16a6 and tossing minor bolt ons + a cam. I mean it is a daily driver and you wouldn't really want to race it out hardcore (lots and lots and lots of maintenance) And school? Wow, I find it hard to work on cars while maintaning a part time job + 17 units + studying. Just my .02.

Yeah but at least I'm lucky enough to be learning how to and working on cars for my school plus I stumbled on a free 1st gen b16a this past year so that took down the price of the swap by about 1500-2000 bux right there.

Instead of buying the Victor X, throttle body, toda cam gears and cams, I would suggest getting better internals. Rods, Pistons and a built block will do lot more in the long run then any of the bolt ons can do for you.

When you buy a turbo for the sound then your just wasting your money. Not to be a dick but you sound like one of those guys that comes next to me and say "Let me hear your BOV"
