Default Advanced timing

Hey guys I'm not sure if this questions been asked but I tried searching and couldn't find it. I've got an 95 LS and I heard advancing your timing is something cheap you could do to get a little more hp. I've also been told to use high octane gas like 93 or 92 and not to set it above 18 btdc. Thing is, I can't seem to find anything higher than 91 where I live. Is that gonna be a problem? Has anyone advanced their timing? Any help?

I am not positive about the LS, but as the the R, the factory range is 14-18 degs. So you should not have a problem if you set it at 18 and run on 91 octane.

I don't know if its all of cali, but I know I've looked around my area and all I can find is 91, anyone wanna confirm that? And thanks for the 411 stageone, I think I might wait for someone with an LS to post just to be sure though.

The 91 oct. is for all of Ca. The engine is suppose to be @ 16 BTDC =/- 2. You could actually run it @ 18 BTDC & still be within spec. That is, of course, on unleaded reg. I am running my car @ 21 BTDC on premuim. I did have it higher but decided not to push it. I never had any detonation, etc. I also run the colder of the two recommended plugs since my car is race/track only car. I know of several people doing the same in tegs( both ls & gsr).
