Default (Automatic) If you're going 70 mph, can you shift into reverse ??

This is a really stupid question... but if i could which I wouldnt, if you're going 70 mph on the freeway, would the transmission/ecu let you shift into reverse on a car with an automatic transmission ?? I have a 1994 Honda Accord Ex by the way.

I doubt it.

The computer won't let u shift to gear lower than d4 while going over 80mph so it is intutive to think that it also won't let u shift into reverse. you don't have to take my word for it though. Try it out and tell me what happens

i doubt it works.... if it did you'd break things... duh...
But i did accidently do that in another car.... the car just shut off... probably a safety feature.

I thought about what might happen while driving yesterday. What a strange thought?

I think the car would make a very loud grinding noise and the smell of burnt tranny would fill the car. Ruined.

About 2 years ago I did just that in a rental car. Got'a love rental cars. Any way. It was a chevy malibu. I was doing about 70 on the freeway and put it into revers to see what would happen. Lets just say it slowed down really fast, made some really bad sounds, and smelled really bad. It was probably only in revers for about 1-2 seconds but man it did not sound good. But was funnier then hell not being my car. Once back in to drive it seemed to shift fine but then again I only drove it for 1 more day before returning it.

I did it by accident once on the manual tranny tho. Not at 70 a lot slower but it grinded the **** outta gears. On the manual it prolly wont let you. Because I tried putting from 60mph to "D1" and would go but wouldnt shift. So i'm guessing the same thing will happen when you put it to "R"

I don't know but I don't think I would want to try it. I acidentally hit my shift *** and shifted it in to neutral for a second going like 50 it revved up really high but that was it luckily it was only neutral.

Great story. Way to **** up a perfectly good rental car You should have driven the car off a cliff with you inside. That would have made an even better story...... in the obituaries.

What a weak attempt at a comeback. Seriously, is that all you could come up with?

Well thank you. I don't know about a chumly pat on the ***. A simple pat on the shoulder would work.

Here's a suggestion. If you are so opposed to damage to rental cars, DO NOT WATCH the first scene in Jackass.

I thought it was the funniest thing ever!!! "I think I hit a dog..."

Rest of the movie is kind of a let down after watching that rental Contour.

But as far as the Auto to reverse at 70, It's going to shatter the input shaft, clutches will tear through the clutch basket...etc... major damage

I accept Visa, Mastercard, or cash....

Seriously guys... here's the straight scoop:
When R is selected and the vehicle is moving forward at speeds over 10 MPH, the control unit outputs 1st gear signal (A solenoid:OFF, B solenoid:ON). As a result, the 1-2 shift valve is engaged, thus blocking the line pressure that would normally flow to the 4th/reverse clutch which inhibits reverse.
In layman's terms, you can physically put the shifter into reverse at 70 MPH, but nothing will happen.
BTW, this applies to Hondas. I don't know about other vehicles.

did it to a car at about 40 mph. Car jerked, engine shut off. Put it back into park, turn the engine on, and back to drive. It didn't seem to damage anything.

Manuals have a lock-out feature right? So you can't shift from 5th to reverse. I've never even thought about what would happen if you went into reverse going that fast, or even thought about trying... haha.

Reverse lock out doesnt work if you take it out of 5th, roll it around in neutral for a second, and then put it back into reverse. So if someone is really that curious about it, give that a shot. That is however while at a standstill that I figured this out, so I dont know if it is the same if your in motion.
