Rear hatch hinge sealer... what is it?

Rear hatch hinge sealer... what is it?
I was wondering if anyone knows what the stuff is they use around our hinges on the rear hatch? It is used to seal the hinge to the body of the car.
It is tuffer than just silcone, and is a stiff rubbery substance.

seal the hinge? the hinge is bolted on and plays no part in sealing water out from the inside of the car.....

Actually the factory does seal it. it prevents rust and water leakage. the gunk they put on is painted. if you open your hatch and look at the hinges you can kinda see it.
