took my head off (would this be the cause of low compression?)

After having an oil leak at the headgasket for so long, I decided to finally take a day off and take off my head. When i took it off, my friend was like "uhh.. how come ur head slides?, do u not have dowel pins?" and im like, uhh i dont remmeber any dowels pins being put in"
long story short, i realize i threw away the dowel pins the last time I had my head off, becuase the didnt look like anything important. (the machine shop took out the dowel pins, and put them into a little baggie w/ a bunch of other stuff from the head) so i though o maybe its jus junk and i threw it away.
so yea, anyways, i put my head back together w/o dowel pins, jus the head bolts lining everything up. needless to say, i fukked up. the head gasket was like 2-3mm out of alignment and it left those nice rings seeen in the pics below. Im thinkin that is also the cause of my head gasket leak.

When i did my compression test with the head gakset like that, i had about 170-180 on the cylinders. i assumed my motor was really weak, and old. would it make sense for the compression numbers to be low due to the head gasket like this?
