ITR pistons in LS
hey whats up. will it be safe to put some itr pistons in my B18B motor? i was gonna do this but i was told that the pistons are very weak and they'll crack. but im not gonna be boosting the motor....maybe spray a small 50 shot down the line...but not too sure yet. so the motor wont be see n any heavy loads.
im not go n boost. and if i can get into the mid 14's then i wont spray the car. i just wanna know if the pistons are strong enough for a NA engine with bolt on's and cams. no serious power adders.
the itr pistons wont crack or anything for just NA power right

thanks for the info. i'll get some itr pistons then. besides getting new rod bearings, and piston rings can i use the LS wristpins?
BTW im gonna get the piston and rods pressed in at a machine shop.

How bout this. I dont really know what you mean by the R pistons being "strong"
I mean ive never heard of a Piston breaking just because it was weak. Yes a motor might breakdown due to lack of tunning but even then its usually a rod bolt will break (in an LSVTEC w/stock LS rod bolts) or a valve will slap a piston(my concern when running R pistons in LSVTEC) or you spin your bearings(from not using new bearings)....but ive never heard of a piston just breaking just because.
Look at it like this.. Honda puts the R piston well...in the integra type R so if its a strong motor and reliable then yes it should work and therefore yes it is a strong piston for your application.
However... My question is has anybody cut deeper valve releifs in there R pistons?
Im concerened that with a cam like Buddy Club I or Skunk Stage 1 the valves and a stock headgasket ill be slapping the tops of the pinstons in an LSVTEC.

i cant ask a simple question???? i was told that the ITR pistons are weaker than the LS or GSR pistons because they tend to crack under high loads. i just wanted to check with u guys to make sure this isnt true. now that i know it isnt, im gonna get a set of type r pistons.
y r u so sour redschoolingbus

p73 pistons w/ls rods on a semi build na motor would be nice, p73 pistons would raise the compression= more power, i sugest u milled the head a lil more for even higher compression. yes it would be a great set up to your b18b build up! n no the p73 are higher compression, i prefer for non vtec CTR> ITR. you cant really say it's weaker or not, it's all depends on your build up/set up and how u use your motor..

Yes, there are! ITR Pistons are almost like putting B16 Pistons in an LS, they yeild the same compression! I am running P30 Pistons with my 404 and I like them!
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you have to machine the LS rods for ITR Pistons just like as if you were putting CTR Pistons on them!

well im not sure if this is applicable for putting in itr pistons on LS rods, but when i took one of my boys prelude rods to the machine shop to get some type S pistons pressed in, all they did was press the wristpin out of the stock piston and rod, heated up the rod with this steam machine thing they got so that it expanded the rod, and then the guy just slipped the wrist pin through the piston and rod.
thats all the machine work i need to do right?
and do i really need to get the rod shot peened?

Thats how they put Pistons on all Rods(OEM)! However with the LS, the rods are different from the Type-R and have to be shaved 1mm on each side to fit the different Pistons! You do not have to do this to put B16 Pistons on LS Rods!

Yes you can ask a question...just nobody was giving you any useful info...therefore thread = Gay not you so chill homey...
Also i didnt know you didnt have to mill the rods for p30 pistons!!....but then if you do go with the R pistons youll also get that coating that comes with them which is supposedly better for the higher revs....
By the way the wifey says im sweet.

it will hold no prob with 50 shot...just tune it tthats the real key...i worked with the pros.....like skunk2,kubo,gardella,bergenholtz....i know all the recipes for power...hehe
well i have a b18a1 and im going to put
crower 404 stage 3 cams
crower springs,retrainers 84162 kit
maybe a pnp ls head
usdm itr pistons (if anyone have jdm itr pistons lmk)
eagle rods
golden eagle block guard
if anyone knows if this is a good set-up or if there is something wrong let me know please.
anyways my question was will the type r pistons work with my set up? also should i use 402stage 2 or 404stage 3 crower cams?

hey El RedSkoolingBus sorry bout come n on to u like that. just thought u were mess n with me. it's cool now.
hmmm, i didnt know that i have to mill the rods either. can anybody else confirm this? if not, then i'll just get the usdm civic si pistons.

Do a search b/c I have heard of ppl having problems with Eagle rods and CTR pistons! Im not sure about the ITR's, but Im sure you run into the same problem! I think it has to do with the wrist pin, however I have seen where ppl fixed this problem so do a search before you get stuck with a set of rods you cant use!

Enlighten us! I wanna know!

ITR pistons in a LS block is a good solid way to go. I sell them to people building LSVTECS all the time
ADVANTAGE: They are a lot stronger over B16 pistons (P30)
DISADVANTAGE: You need to mill 1mm of each side of the rod
All motor set-up will be fine with ITR pistons and 50 shot AS LONG as you have enough fuel.

How are they stronger? I know they are teflon coated!
