Its like a DeadBolt lock for your hood, Its seperate from your hood latch and it must be unlocked for you to open your hood.
Its an easy install but makes a BIG difference when someone tries to pop your hood.
You can also instal the lock part only and leave out the ignition cut off if you do not want to get into all the wireing. Either way it works great!

Yeah I think it is. Other companies make similar locks, but I don't think Audiovox makes them anymore.
