Default Rear CRX hatch glass--tips and how-to's

First i just want to introduce myself to you all, Hopefully i contribute to the forum and have some nice times in here.

I just bought a Stock CRX rear hatch section. I wanted a spare one. One for the stock look, the other so i can break the glass save as much steel as i can. But after seeing it, i decided i'll keep the glass intact, just incase u never know.

Anyone have any how-to's or tips on taking off the glass intact? It looks easy, but i just want to get some pointers before i get started.

Thanks for the info.

Welcome

If the rear glass is anything like a windshield and you dont have the special glass puller I think youre probably **** out of luck but might as well try right

Just poke a piece of dental floss or some sort of flexible but strong thin wire through between the galss and metal underneath, go right around until its no longer held by any silicone

Grab a buddy and some careful hands and try and lift it out of place and try to find a place to store it where it wont get smashed lol

good luck

I saw on the online manual to use either piano wire or guitar string the E cord if i remember right...and there is a point near the top of the hatch (toward the front of the car) to feed it through. It will take quite a while but it should work

Any glass supplier will sell you the necessary tools, can't think of the names right now. Think of a bike handle with a wire rope and an L shaped blade at the end that slides under the glass then is pulled in the direction you want the silicone cut. Also, I believe the Mac Tools or Snap-On trucks have them usually. - Darrell

A few ways to take it out, if you have no tools, the piano/guitar wire trick will work. You have to find a way to poke it throught the adhesive, which is a urethane rubber and is rather tough. Once you have it through, just slide it back and forthand it will slice through it. If you have any "cheap" tools stores, we have one called Harbor Freight, they will probably have what is called a "cold knife". This is an aluminum handle a little wider than your hand. It has an "L" shaped blade and a second handle to pull with. They sell for about $6 for a cheap one, but it will get you through a couple jobs before the cable breaks. Tempered glass is pretty strong, but glass doen't bend very easy, so try not to put strain on the glass while you are pulling the knife. It should cut out pretty easy, most salvage yards use the wire method, I would recommend that for you too.
