I don't mean to steal your thread but would you or anyone else happen to have or be able to take a picture of the proportionating valve on the firewall?
I just bought one from the local yard and want to make sure its the right thing. I would really appreciate it.

Holy thread hijack, y0!
Anyway, to the original poster: Any car will slide a lot if you don't have ABS and you don't brake properly. Just slamming on the brake isn't the right thing to do most of the time.
As soon as there is skidding, small rubber particles that are scraped off cause even more traction loss. That's why once you're skidding, you keep going for a while. Imagine your tire on small ball bearings. Same principle.
Try to not skid when you have to brake hard. If you don't have ABS, try to at least do what the ABS is doing. It's almost like threshold braking. Braking HARD to the point where it just about loses traction. Then doing it again. ABS does this fast, while your feet can't do it as fast.
