Default valve spring compressor with head off car?

Has anybody had any luck using a snap-on or schley "on the car" style ohv valve spring compressor, with the head off the car? If so, what do you use to keep the valves from going down?

I'd rather not buy another valve spring compressor if it is not needed.

post pic of the valve spring compressor you are using....

valves usually don't fall because of the valve guide seals!!!

yea, I know the valves stay up, but it is kind of a pain if I accidentally knock into it with the retainer and it slides down a little. I think I will go and see how far I get.

You can pressurize the cyl and that should hold the valves up.

this wont work with the head off the engine. just stuff a piece of towe under the valve so it doesn't fall back down.

I thought he said on the car, my mistake.

Anyways, just put a rag in the chamber in and clamp the head down to a table. Works for me
