new wheels!
well, not really new, but:
so i wanted new wheels for my wagon, as the Accord SE-i wheels were getting ratty. plus, 195/55R14 tyres were getting to be both hard to find and fecking expensive.
but, since the civic's kind of a beater, i didn't want to spend a ton of money. one of my employees said he had a set of 15's off of a civic that he could part with. what he had was a set of these:

but they looked like total ***. i wish i'd taken a picture, 'cause they were really really bad. i gave him 10 bucks for the set, that's how bad they looked.
now, i've never been a huge fan of the silver/machined look on wheels; too much like it's trying to look like a two-piece or something. i really hate fake rivets and bolts, too. so, i took them to the local powdercoat shop to get them re-done in gloss black.
here's how they came out:

it ended up costing me $100 for all four, instead of the $50 i was quoted, but that's o.k., as they had a lot of trouble stripping the wheels (the $100 included everything, stripping and powdercoating). they did two coats, a gloss colour coat and then a clear on top, and i can't wait for my tyres to come in!

Damn, those black ones look better then when they came out the factory door. To think you can't even get OEM HXs for that cheap, that was great. Sell them and make a nice profit.

The rims looked cheap at first. Much better in black. Hella cool for $110
The balancer at the tire shop chips the powdercoating off the hub of my rim everytime. I have black rims.
Just something to think about once you mount tires and balance them. Now i put duct tape around the hub before they put it on the balancer.

i run the local tyre shop. well, not your local tyre shop, but mine. so i don't have to worry about that.
but if they are contacting the hub when they balance your wheels, then they aren't doing it right.
the proper method to balance an alloy wheel is with a flange plate adapter, like those manufactured by Haweka or Coats. since alloy wheels (particularly aftermarket alloy wheels) are lug-centric, they need to be balanced centered on the lug holes. a flange plate system will allow the tyre shop to do this, with the added benefit of not contacting any surface on the wheel other than the lug seats and mounting surface.
i'd suggest asking if they have a set of flange plates, and if they do, ask them to use them when they balance your wheels. if they don't, find a shop that knows what they are doing.

here ya go:

the tyres are Kumho KH11s, 195/50R15. not what i would have liked to install, but since the car's a beater, i went with the least expensive tyre i could find (that was still "name brand").
the ride is a little better than my SP8000s had, but they don't seem to have the same levels of grip (duh). very quiet, though.

Nice wheels for the wago!
Now go invest in a box of Krylon and get your car all one color. Or a cheapo paint job. Do something because that thing looks sickening. 7 different colors? Almost looking like you ran over Walt Disney and colors splattered everywhere.
I dig the wheels though.... just hating on the car.

plans are in the works to paint it. we're going to build a temporary paint booth in one bay of the garage (it's nice to have a huge garage - 9 bays), fire up the compressor and shoot it. i just need to get some time off of work.

it's a Corbeau Forza. i wish i'd gotten the black one, but at the time i ordered mine, all the warehouse had in stock was blue, red and yellow. so i got red.

not bad for the price but IMO I would have kept them silver for any wheels powder coated must use extra caution so it doesn't chip.
Friends wheel are powder coated and no matter what the paint just chips.
But it's still nice for the price.
