Just about to hit 70k...what to I need to rebuild the head?
Well, my R is about to hit 70k on the odom. and to make a long story short....my R is second hand (more like 4th hand) and was previously heavily modded with cams, gears all usual bolt ons etc. Well, the previous owner was a freakin snake and beat the hell out of the engine. The engine is pinging pretty loud and I haven't been able to eliminate it despite the fact I've changed the engine timing, replaced plugs, all new ignition components, new timing belt, new TB, valve adjust, all new fluids, all new belts, new cam seals, etc (all OEM parts). Well, I think its time to quit playing aound and rip the head off. I was wondering what is involved in rebuilding the head and what I need to look out for? I was also contemplating getting the old PR3 Port and Polished before it goes back on. How much am I looking at financially for rebuilding the head for parts? Which parts are generally replaced?
if you rebuild your head, that doesnt mean you will eliminate your pining issues. And when you mention "rebuild" your head, what do you mean, you want to replace your valves/valvesprings/ cams etc etc??
Again by replacing the valves/valvesprings you will not eliminate any of the pinging problems you have, what cams are you using? are they still stock? Is the head milled? if so how much? What kind of headgasket..1, 2, or 3 layer?
Remove the head, see if the bottom end is stock or not. Chances are it is not stock since you claim to be pinging soo much. I hate to say it but i doubt your head is the problem right now.

i remember when my motor was pinging, was real cute when i brought it to my mechanic and found out i spun all my bearings in the lower end. your not driving with it pinging are you?
The head is completely stock, as are the cams and valvetrain. Stock head gasket. Stock plugs....stock everything. And YES, I'm am driving the car while its pinging--every day. If something goes BOOM!
but thats about all I can say, I'll have to fix it if thats the case. So the pinging is most likey a part in the crankcase (ie rod, crank, piston)? What should do? Like I said before, I know the car was heavily modded I just don't know exactly what was done beside cams, cam sprockets, vfac, suspension and wheels. Its definately possible that some internal work was done although I have not seen whats inside the longblock. Is the problem serious enough to warrent getting cornholed by the service department at Acura?

i'm not sure if you are familiar with valvetrain being loud, but knocking/pinging sound you describe could be bearings related therefore bottom end issue.. hows your oil pressure? maybe your oil pump taking a dump.. hook up a gauge and see if its within limits. .. also, are you sure its not your alternator belt or anything of that sort.. and/or tranmission noise, does it get louder when a/c is on at idle

OK....lets see if I can narrow this sound down for you guys. I apoligize for not doing this first. You know the sound you hear just before your engine stalls...a kinda quick rattling noise...my car does that when I punch the gas, mind you I'm in the same gear(ie I punch the gas without switching gears...I'm moving fast enough that the car should accelerate smoothly -- it still does accel smooth its just noisy as hell). I'll adjust the timing every month or so and right after the adjustment the sound almost completely goes away but then gradually comes back over time. There is also another noise which I can only relate to shaking a burnt out light bulb/a low wind noise...this is always present. This noise becomes more apparent the harder the gas is pressed. There is even a third noise that I recognized immediately after I did a valve adjustment that is a loud rattling when I start the engine noise and this noise gets significantly louder when the A/C is turned on when the vehicle is idling. Please ask me to clarify anything even more, I could see how this description would be confusing but I'm giving it my best shot.

Sounds like you have a bottom end issue, not a head problem.
Without hearing it first hand its very hard to say, bring it to a few shops to get opinoins.
