LS/Vtec, Vtec controller good or bad ?

I have an ls/vtec that is build pretty much from top to bottom and i have heard that a vtec controller isn't necessary how true is that statement with a complete build?
If you have the cash to get a standalone go with it. A VAFC is a piggyback, it can help with the tuning process, but will not be as beneficial as a standalone will be.
