Default Transmission Failure: 2001 Acura CL-S

i was driving this yesterday through brooklyn when my CL's transmission began slipping. From first, it would rev to 4000 rpms, 2nd gear would kick in and turbo boost the car forward with a hard jerk. same went for 3rd & 4th gear.

Then when i go to parallel park in front of my girlfriend's house, i kick it into reverse and it doesn't catch and i'm coasting FORWARD in neutral. i turn the car off and start it up again and then reverse catches.

as we drive down the street later, the car seems to run fine THEN i see that it's at 5500 rpms going 40 mph. so i pull over and test it on a sidestreet and now it doesn't shift out of first.

i live in jersey and i could've driven the 29 miles back (through brooklyn & manhattan traffic), but said no to that cuz i didn't want to mess up that transmission any more. i ended up getting it towed for $300.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/...x.htm

i saw this article on another thread and was wondering how it was for anyone else with the listed recall hondas/acuras when you brought it into the dealership. did they honor the extended transmission warranty or were they a bunch of ******? and also, how much would fixing/repairing/replacing a slipping transmission be on a CL?

THANKS

As long as you have 100k miles or less you should have no problem at all getting your trans. replaced. I work at an Acura dealership and we replace them every day no questions asked.

You might be able to get reimbursed on that tow bill too. If your local dealer gives you any crap just call Acura customer relations.

Thanks again for the insight. So the extended 7 years/100K mile warranty is legit?

Yes, the 7-year/100,000-mile warranty is legitimate on all '99-'02 TL, early batch '03 TL, and '01-'03 CL.

How many miles do you have? If under 50,000 miles, you will almost certainly get the towing fee reimbursed. If over 50,000 miles, then you might have to fight for it.

But the dealership shouldn't give you trouble at all regarding the transmission failure. It happens all the time, thanks to the great engineering of Honda transmissions.

I've got an '03 with 28k miles, and it's shifting really rough. I'm afraid its time is near.

Good luck with everything and glad to hear that nothing bad happened. Several members on A-TL and A-CL had their transmissions fail and lock up on the highway and crash. One of them got into a really bad one and his car was totalled.

Yet no recall from Honda/Acura regarding the 3rd gear clutchpack problem. But ONE case of the 2nd gear problem (probably very isolated) and they do a recall. Why? Because it's cheaper, and it'll make the uninformed public think that the transmission problem is dealt with. And I'm sure it's just a very big coincidence that the recall was announced the day after publication of J.D. Power ratings.

This is my first and last Honda ever. **** 'em.

Sucks cuz the tranny failed and I had to get it towed with 50,647 miles on the OD. i was on the jackie robinson parkway in queens when i got locked into gear and had to exit onto a sidestreet.

yeah, i'm glad nothing bad really happened, thanks, but everytime the tranny kicked in after revving to 5000 rpms, it felt like i got rear ended each time. The D5 started blinking and the Check Engine, VSA & '!' lights came on at the same time just before the tranmission crapped out. Thanks Acura for the heads up.

I REALLY HOPE ACURA DOESN'T BECOME ****** WHEN I BRING MY CAR IN. If i get crap,
I think I might have to agree with you about the first and last honda thing. my old corolla in college lasted 8 years & 89K miles and the only reason it crapped out was because i didn't maintain it. i bought this ac so i wouldn't have to worry. Garbage engineering...

50647 is out of warranty on other things, but your car is still covered 'til 100,000 miles on the transmission.

You're fine.

Any updates?

i got it towed yesterday to the acura dealership, (actually my dad did), and he talked to the service guy who was aware of the 100K extended warranty even before my dad flashed the warranty extension letter and said that the repairs will "likely" be under the warranty. i'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that likely will become definitely.

i checked acura-cl.com forums and some dude had the EXACT same scenario happen to him with the check engine, VSA and ! lights come on just before his tranny failed. i'm kinda sorta glad to see that my case isn't an isolated incident.

do they give out loaner cars, by the way?

They should give you a loaner for it. But sometimes it all depends on the dealer. If they dont just bitch.

More good news: they did give me a loaner, a nice fresh Ford Focus from Enterprise. a teg or RSX woulda been nice, but i'll take what i can get.

also, my CL is covered by the extended warranty so i'm getting a new tranny for free. they didn't give any headaches over that or the loaner car, which they picked the tab up on.

after i get my car back, i'm gonna go for getting reimbursed for the towing.

No, push for the reimbursement now. Make sure to let them know that you want that money back. The longer you wait, the less chance of getting it back. That's just how it is with paperwork and reimbursements.

Good advice You're barely past the original 50k mile warranty. They shouldn't give you much trouble.

I had the tranny recal done on my 01'' type s a few weeks ago and i think i like the way it shifts now compared to before. Its nice and firm now and pulls harder to and it was Free 99 to get it done. If you want to get more info about the recall go to http://acura-cl.com join up and do a search it even has a tranny forum dedicated to this one thing.

Good luck on the tranny but acura will fix it everycar has the warranty extension so your all good.

Yeah, they didn't give me any grief over it, even gave us a loaner. i'm pushing for the reimbursement now, but the transmission job wasn't perfect. the reverse gear grinds and the engine is louder than it was before (the motor hums now). it runs great, but i cringe when i put it in reverse. i'm going back to acura to get it checked out. it said the transmission was remanufactured on the invoice. does that mean anything?

i'm happy the car is up and running again though.

Take the car back immeditately! They will order you another transmission.

The dealership I work at, we ship and receive about 6 transmissions a day! You would think that a company as good as Honda/Acura would figure out how to make a transmission by now. It's amazing how bad they suck.

Took it back to the dealership and the GM test drove it himself to find out the tranny's still messed up. they gave me a ford freestar and agreed to pay for the towing.

even tho their products might be flawed the honda/acura service is great. can i add any warranties to my car now so i won't have to worry in the future?

Honda has had this problem with their auto tranny's since 91. Even now I had to take my 04 TL to the dealer and they put a tranny cooler on it. Some type of recall about 2nd gear overheating or something. Since then my car seems a little smoother.
