Yes, Its safe.

Think about it... Even if your axle was to break COMPLETELY in half... Your axle only drives the hub. The hub is attached as an assembly to the upper and lower control arms, which is attached to the frame.

Worst case is if it breaks, youll have to pull over when you can, and have it towed home.

The CV joint on my right axel failed on me once while i was driving around 60mph... There were no signs of failure the axle just fell apart...

I was driving along and all of a sudden my wheel jerks to the right.. I pulled felt and luckly I didn't go over to the next lane.. Then it just felt like I had a flat tire on the front right.. It was hard to steer left, the car just kept pulling to the right...

I was able to drive it home on a doughnut spare and I didn't figure out it was the axle until I started taking it apart..

Anyway you should change that axel because if it breaks you will be stuck or even worst it might cause an accident.. A tow back home will probably cost more than the price of a remanufactured axle which will have some sort of warrenty...

if the boot over the cv joint is shredded and you've been driving on it like that for a while, you might not have enough grease in there. if there is absolutely no grease in the joint, the bearings could seize up, causing the hub and wheel to not turn properly. this would cause whichever wheel the bad axle was on to either not spin at all or not spin at the same rate as the other wheel, which would cause the car to pull to that direction. that could cause unwanted lane changes, or worse, if you're going through a turn while this happened, you might not be on the road for long.

keep in mind, thats a very extreme senario and i've never heard of that happening to anyone. its wise to just change the axles when you know they're bad. if you don't already have autozone or advance auto reman axles, i would go ahead and get those. it should cost you about $110 for the pair if you give them the core. after that, its a lifetime warranty. and axles only take about 20 min to replace.

How did you drive your car home with an open diff? One wheel would be getting grip, so technically it should have just revved up w/o moving. . .

my car tends to drift to the right.. but im still unsure what exactly is the problem, I searched previous threads and I've just ignored the noise, but its getting kinda worse now. Its a constant click, click, tick, click, sounds coming from the drivers side (left side) wheel, but thats what I can hear, my friend said its coming from the other wheel too? where should I start and what should I change, the CV joints and boot, or the axles?? thanks

I was talkin to this honda mechanic a while ago and he had an older civic hatch and the CV shafts were goin on them so he deceided to see how long they would last before they snapped and he said he got a good 1500 miles before they went

I was wondering the same thing.. Apparently the cv joint didn't disconnect completely.. Im not sure what happend exactly since i didnt open the boot up... Just changed the axle...
