Default suspension questions

i own a 95 GS-R and i want to upgrade my suspension but im not sure about certain things like what exactly is the difference between a gas shock suspension and a regular spring and shock suspension. Which one is better and why? Also how does the gas shock suspension work?

Almost all shocks are filled with gas...minus the vette's uber cool magneto fluid ****. When you hit a bump, the shock compresses the gas that's inside...kind of like a piston. The more it compresses, the more pressure there is to prevent the wheels upward movement. The springs aid in this process. I believe http://www.team-integra.net has an article on suspension dynamics...it's been a while since I have been there though.
