00 TL (auto)
2000 TL (non Type S) and has the clutch less shifting tranny. What is the RPM's at when going 65 on the freeway? And can someone explain how the trans works? What is the gear ratio, etc? The RPMs seem really low.
do you actually have the car? or are you just asking for your own knowledge? as far as i know, rpm top gear at 65mph shouldn't be over 3k. i forget exactly, but should be in the area of 2600-2800rpm.. anyone confirm?
gear ratios are :
1st gear 2.563
2nd gear 1.552
3rd gear 1.022
4th gear 0.653
5th gear 0.471
Reverse 1.846
Final Drive Ratio 4.429
the rpms are really low because its not a dohc vtec, its sohc vtec. all things considering, it still revs pretty high for a luxury sedan. base = 6300 redline, type s = 6900. And, if it don't make power up top, don't let it rev that high.
and lastly, the old debate of the SS (sport shift) honda's. this is by no means a "clutch" less system. its more of an advanced computer (TCM transmision control module) that rev matches your downshifts and upshifts. it uses hydrolics to do the "shifting". if you're asking how to use ss in real life driving. you just slide it into the lil notch it has (+ and -) then drive like a manual. upshift when u want, down shift when u want. complete stops, the tcm will automatcially down shift to 1. also, the tcm does not automatically upshift for you, so you'll hit fuel cut off if you don't shift up. Overall, its handy if you don't want a manual. Ex: city driving, more then one driver for car, lazy. etc etc.

yes...5 speed auto. I have an '02 TLS. It's no where near as nice as having a real manual shift but it is a good alternative. Especially when you can let the rev's get up there and have the vtec kick in.

what about the RPM;s? u gotta up shift if you're in the ss mode.. but don't have to downshift. it'll auto rev match for you if you downshift.. that's probably what you're not use to. to be safe, look at owners manual to see the top speed of each gear, so you'll be able to down shift safely.
