knocking noise from engine????
well this is a brand new engine ..... when i started the engine for the first time it knocked like no tommorow... i shut it down drained the oil and there were no metal chips or any thing in the oil ..... i checked everything arounfd the engine and there was nothing loose... i filled it back up with oil and fired it up again and it was knocking again.... drained the oil again and no metal chips ..... any one know what coul this be?
Did you build the engine? Are you sure you got the cams lined up right? Try turing the motor over by hand to get a better idea where the noise is coming from.
i put the head on .... but a reputable machine shop from were i live put the bottom end together.... u think a alternator could make a clunking noise or a pulley becasue the noise is comming from the timming belt side of the motor
...any ideas?????

I doubt it is the alternator but you could pull the alternator belt off and find out. It is worth a shot.
You could also compresion test the cylinders to make sure you have not bent any valves. Hopefully it is something simple or in the bottom end and not your fault. Please keep us posted on this.

I am not sure of your setup but I imagine that is right since you are running a turbo. I have never done a turbo setup so I can't say for sure. You should post your setup so that others with more experience can chime in. IT may be time to pull the pan and check to bottom end. Sorry to hear about your troubles. What a pain in the ***.
heres the low down on the motor
gsr block with darton sleeves
crower rods
cp pistons
acl bearings
b16 head with skunk 2 retainers, dual valve springs , and ferrara valve (how ever u spell it)
fully port and polished
aem cam gears
t-72 turbo
sfp manifold
pwr water to air intercooler
thats some of the stuff on the engine but .. damn wha could be this noise....could a harmonic balancer make the noise? or a loose turboon the manifold? or a alternator?... i know the bearings arent fucked cause no metal is in the oil...
ANY IDEAS?

sounds kinda like piston slap when the car is cold. Make sure the timing is correct and your dead on with your timing belt. Im saying piston slap, but dont take my word for it.
How long did you have it running for? If it is the bearings and you didn't have it running for lond it might not show metal flacks yet. Try isolating the noise by removing one plug wire at a time till the noise goes away. It may also just piston slap as Notstock93 said.
r u sure its a knock and not a tap?
did u prime the engine first before starting?
when u got the motor do u know if all the main and rod bearings had proper lube when install?
if u do have a knock take the oil pan off and check ur bearings one may be loose or not torque rite(u never know it may be a friday and one wasn t torque)

Sounds like it to me, let it warm up and see if the sound lessens, it takes a while for the pistons to fully expand and fill the cyl so they rattle when cold.

a dented oil pan will cause a knock, but the pan itself wont make that sound. it creates a knock because it starves the engine for oil.
and if they are forged pistons its probably piston slap, let the engine warm up to operating tempratures and see if its still there. the forged pistons expand more in the cylinder bore so till they heat up there is a larger space and you are hearing the piston rock back and forth in the bore.

Bite the bullet, start it up and let it warm to Operating Temp
If its a bad bearing, you need to rebuild anyway, if it only piston slap, congrats. Either way, you are going to have to turn the engine on and see. Tell us what happens.

could be a combo of piston slap and loose valve clearence adjustment...they can make a freshly build engine sound like ***.......fire it up let it warm up and see how it goes.....
my friend went over today and checked out a few things and found out that the alternator was clicking and was making the noise ...... pulled it off and found that it was very hard to spin... so he put a new one on and fired up the car and the noise was gone ...... thanks for all ur help
