Are pad retainers important?
Hi,
I have a 98 Accord EX 4cyl 4 dr. When we got the car earlier this year, I noticed that the driver's side rear callipers were missing a retainer( the higher or forward one). I didn't think much of it until this past weekend when I heard a whine coming from the rear brakes( it happened about 2 weeks ago but it was progressively worse over the weekend). I took apart the brakes to check it and found that the inner pad was worn down to the wear marker. However, the wear was not uniform but rather worn near the pad marker and the other end still has quite a bit of pad left. I cleaned out the pins and lubed them well and it seemed to slide well. Checked the piston and it too seemed to go in and out well. Couldn't figure it out until today when I thought that could the missing pad retainer be the culprit? I have put disc brake quiet lube from autozone on the area because i thought it was making noise from there but i am also wondering if it is getting caught up there? i had taken a wire brush and cleaned out the calipers removing road grime and rust but i did not check it the surface was smooth and flush.
Does anyone have any idea?
I called up the honda dealer and they wanted $10 for a retainer. I thought that was a huge rip and am wondering if anyone has any extras or had done a home made one using some SS material?
Would appreciate any help!
Thanks!!!!
Danz

Well I think you should just buy a new one from Honda, sometimes price is not important when it comes to saftey. That is probally the problem with your uneven brake pad wear I would guess. I know on my old 96 accord ex the rear pads were worn totally uneven, because they didn't fit exactly right and someone before me jammed the pads in. You might call around and see if you can buy one from like an auto parts store or brake shop cheaper than honda. Well good luck.
