Question on roll cage?
there is a roll cage that i am looking at for my 88 crx, but it is a bolt together one. how sturdy are these and are they just as afective as the welded in ones? also how much do they usually cost. thanks
the joints that bolt together are the weak points.
they dont tie into the car very well and they are intrusive because they are designed to fit in a full interior car.
they are heavy.
they are cheap for a reason.
please whatever you do at least throw the hardware away and use AN stuff. whatever you do dont use grade 8 junk.

I have yet to see a bolted joint fail, but I have heard stories. They are legal for most entry level road racing and I believe they are safe. I would agree with Doctor CorteZ that they do not connect to the car will and generally have small foot plates which, although I have never seen it, are said to be able to punch through the floor. Also, their main drawback is that they are not as tight to the body as a custom cage so they are more in your way. If you can afford a custom cage up front, you'll be glad you spent the extra money. Otherwise, I think they are a safe option for budget minded racers. I chose to do both...I have a bolt-in cage with welded seams, welded door bars and dash bar, and new larger foot plates. I think that was time well spent for safety, but it doesn't address the fact that I don't have as much interior room as I would if it were a full custom cage.
