Default Smog failed! I need to fix for Hydrocarbons and Carbon Monoxide..please help!!

Well I failed my smog today however i was relieved to have passed inspection and nox and stuff now I just need to do something about HC and CO.

HC in Grams/Mile is 1.61-----------------Standard 1.00

CO in Grams/Mile was 47.54!!------------Standard 12.00

nearly 4X over the standard on my CO. So please let me know how I go about fixing these things! thanks.

you will never pass smog with that engine, you will have to convert to OBD1 and get it smogged as a 1995 delsol DOHC vtec

... and use the Del Sol ECU while you're at it.

CO goes up when HC goes up.

Most likely something with the ignition, but might be fuel control devices (bad pattern from the injectors, lazy O2, etc.)

the biggest HC cause is from mis-fire:
I have heard people who have high CO got it down with as simple as an oil change.

When was the car tuned up last and when was the last oil change?

O and BTW have you had your CAT tested to see if it was working OK?

Just went through all this. Im running same set up, with no cai.

I changed,

2 o2's (oxygen sensors.com)
cat (carsound)

The dizzy went out during my attempts to pass, so dont know if that was adding to the problem or not...

Mine runs clean as new now. Good luck!

Post ur NoX numbers. When u fix the HC, it could bring the NoX up and put u past the max allowed, if u are borderline. There should also be more numbers, like for 15mph and 25mph. Post those up. What spot u goin to in LBC, **** let my *** know for future reference...IM me.

I live in the LBC but i'm trying to register in AZ because that's where my parents live and all they have is the sniffer no real visual inspection...thus I can keep my b16 smog legal if I can pass the damn thing.

NOX is .97------------standard 2.50

so that's fine.

so just to verify my route of fixing will be PCV Valve, o2 sensors, new cat (i was going to get one anyway)...anything else? i really don't even know where to start with the ignition and dizzy, i just got an oil change, replaced plugs and wires? what other easy fixes might there be?

I just passed a few weeks ago. I installed a new carsound cat and O2 sensor right before the test. After leaning the mixture out a bit, what really made a big difference was swapping the "Mugen'd" PR3 for a stock PM6 and it passed well below the max numbers.

nice co number jeez im a smog tech here and cali

and ur running REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY RICH, co= ur fuel mixture, and jeez u sure are dumping alot of fuel in ur engine, when co goes up hc goes up to? no whoever said that is wrong,

ur hc is fine well u failed for it but not that much doesnt seem like a misfire, find out why you are running so damn rich

hc- happens usually during misfires/or a cylinder is dead, hc is unburnt raw fuel so if u got alot of unburnt fuel (hc) coming out its either due to ignition/dead cylinder etc.

co- is ur a/f mixture the more co u have the more rich it is, usually due to lets say air filter can cuase not enough air/to much fuel other things that mite effect co is the fuel system, map sensor etc etc.

nox happens when combustion temps raise up to 2500, what happens at 2500? nitrogen and oxygen combine make a baby called oxides of nitrogen and noX is one of the contributing factors to photochmeical smog

if ur having a misfire ur HC would be up REAL HIGH and ur o2 reading would be up real HIGH cause if ur misfiring ur not firing **** ur just spitting out oxygen/hc, give me ur other readings so i can have a further understandng

I have a B&M FPR and Im running a 1.8 LS ECU on my B20. I usually set the fuel pressure around 42psi. Took it in to get it checked and I totally failed. Turned down the fuel pressure to 34psi and passed. I would suggest trying the stock PM6 and see what that does for you.

Good Luck

Blaze

those were the only three readings CO, HC and NOX here in arizona.

my car doesn't misfire...it runs absolutely perfect without any codes or anything, I get about 345 miles to the tank...not a damn problem. and damn that pcv valve is a bitch to get to

I'm telling you, get a PM6 and swap it in when you get there. My JDM B16A has CTR cams, B&M FPR, DC headers and CAI.

carbon monoxide is created when there is not enought oxygen. try checking your air injection system.

just put some R cams in your motor...more power...and the engine will breath better to combust that extra fuel
