Default How long can u ride on a bad axle?

I'm not sure what the problem is but im pretty sure its an axle problem and i wanna know how long i can drive with the bad axle? my funds are really low right now and it'll probably be at least a couple more weeks or so for me to get enough money to fix it. also what can happen if u keep driving on a bad axle?

Here in Hawaii torn cv boots used to be a item to be checked during the annual safety check. It has since been taken off the list of "safety" items since it was not found to be an issue.
When you say your axle is bad what do you mean? IMO if your axle is not snapped in half you should be ok for now. At most the joints will begin to click during turns.

As gtfour43 said, you'll hear it start to click during turns and when the axles have load put on them.

This will get progressively worse until they do it all the time. Then one day, it'll break/snap. You'll be stuck whereever you are.

They generally last a pretty long time, I rode with my bad axle for several months and nothing happened until I just changed it. My friend rode with bad axle for about 3 months when it snapped in the middle of some road. I had to replace it for him in a parking lot in the middle of winter, snowing, and -10 degrees.

haha thats your axle about to break. why dont you just spend the 70 bucks at auto zone...look at the article on team integra on how to replace it, and fix your problem. IMO its a super easy install and it will be cheaper than payin for a tow truck when you snap your axel. unless you have AAA

As soon as I seen my boots were torn, and that my steering shook like hell when excelerating, I only drove around on those axels for about a month or less! Not worth my headache having it break on me on the side of a hwy!

Who can confirm this? NO ONE!! How can anyone confirm weather or not it will break or not. We can't confirm that your car will start tomorrow. We can't confirm weather or not you'll wake up with a boner. The only thing I can confirm is that I may go to work tomorrow and if I do I'll be sure to take a nice healthy **** while I"m there. It may, it may not happen. Chances are you'll be fine.

it takes like 15 min to do it your self, jack up the car and take off the wheel. un bolt balljoint and axel nut. pull hub out of the way and remove axel. its really easy

Sorry to thread jack but when the dealer performed a warranty repair on my car, they said my CV boots were leaking. I did a tranny fluid change a couple months ago and noticed a black sticky residue on the CV boot. Is this a major problem? Will this affect my axles later on?

It will break anytime it wont, depend on how you drive it.

It would be a 15 minute job if everything were perfect and you had a shop full of pneumatic tools ready to go. In the real world it can take 30 min-2 hrs. Getting the ball joint apart can be a bitch and if you tear the boot then you have to change that. Then the axle can be a real **** to get out, especially if it's on the driverside (the intermediate shaft can move on you). Then it's sometimes a bitch getting the new axle and clip into the tranny becasue it's all new and the clip gets bound up. It really depends how recently everything was pulled and how lucky you are .

Oh yea, where are you located? I'm not familiar with "Straight Chirpin", but you may be able to find a fellow H-T member willing to help you out for alot cheaper than a shop.

Mine does loud popping when I turn. Feels like the front end is about to rip off. How much life do they have left by the description?

oh man, I've been through 4 sets of CCT axles (brand that AutoZone and NAPA sells) in the past TWO MONTHS and all of them have had vibration problems.

The guy at NAPA said I could bring mine back and get credit towards new axles, which I'm probably going to do since I'm sick of this vibration crap.

I was going to get a set of CCT axles, but decided not to after reading about yours and other's problems with them. I'm going to use GCK axles insteadm which are new construction and have a lifetime warranty.

who sells those?

I talked to Tom in the EG forum and he says he has never had good luck w/ rebuilt axles, so I guess I'm not the only one.

You can get GCK axles from Adavanced Auto as well as Autozone. If you go through Autozone, they'll have to order a pair for you, as they aren't stocked in the stores.

it will be okay u can keep it for like 2 weeks but to be safe dont run it on the freeway.. and if u didnt change it it will damage ur rackin pinion too and all thats stuff.. so dont keep it broken for long.. anyways does is making noise when u turn ur steering wheels?? if it doesnt it might just ur cv boots. its only 30 bucks to change it each axle..

changing CV boots is pretty pointless, if the old boot is torn and the grease has sprayed out, that means dirt has already gotten in there and done its damage. It's better to replace the whole axle.

And I'm pretty sure it won't do anything to the steering rack.

THERE IS NO NOISE WHEN TURNING! only when i hit bumps on regular driving then the noise is heard. and on the freeway the noise just happens a lot because of the road conditions on the freeway i believe. if its not the axle then i can be relieved for awhile.

Yeah I completely agree on that. Plus replacing boots in a bit more work.
