Default short beaverun race report

wow! long three day race weekend for me! here's the cliff's notes:

take the car out sat for practice. observe that a/f is all wrong. make another adjustment on the fuel press reg. go out for short qualifying session. a/f still not right; screw it and try to turn a few good laps. notice that handling is demonic. especially in the kink before turn 10. major countersteering required thru the kink, and the correction really eats up the available brake zone into 10. i note that franza does not seem to have any problems blowing my doors off in this part of the track. drat. oh, and whitaker is way faster. great. at least matt is here, and he's slow like me!

sat race, i am on the 2nd row. as we come around on the pace lap, i am in 3rd gear. i was wondering "should i use 2nd?" (remember, i have very little seat time with this combo). i decide to use 3rd gear. franza and whitaker get a great start, and even in 3rd gear i am pretty much up with them. i do about 1 or 2 laps at speed and coming up the hill to turn 7 my drivers side axle explodes into shrapnel. ziiiiiiiiiiiiiing goes the motor. no drive whatsoever. i coast down the hill and off the track. end of my race .

replace axles that night. smell like CV joint grease now. great.

sunday comes and i take the car out. everything seems ok, but i do only about 8 to 10 laps to get a qualifying time. i come in, fearing that the axle life might be marked in minutes. i think it was a 1:07.1 i turned. demonic handling still there, but i am getting more used to it and where it likes to show itself.

in the second row, this time on the outside behind a D sports racer Diasio car. franza on my left. whitaker on the poll on the inside 1st row. i decide to definitely use 2nd gear this time. flag drops and i mash it. woooooo hoooooo! i practically crash into the D sports guy. i have never even floored this thing in 1st or 2nd; holy cow it jumps! i am fairly sure that if the Diasio wasn't there, i could have led into the first turn. it jumped that good... as it was, i try to sneak past the Diasio, but franza is a master and has the inside; just not enough room for me to try it, especially with the way it is currently trying to "smokey-the-bandit" around the corners. i don't want to get sideways and smash up all three honda guys in the first turn!!! so it is whitaker, franza, me. the front pair is gently gently extending every lap. but by no means a runaway. and the diasio is on my tail, but not gaining. about 7 or 8 laps go by and we start lapping the slower traffic. and i make a big mistake. i get greedy, as i am still within range of franza and whitaker. i need to get around the traffic with no delay. i come up on my teamate for the enduro (mondays race) in an old mazda protege. i figure he will slow and hold the inside. it appears to me that i can really stretch and pass him before turn 10. nope. i wait a fraction too long, get around him, but can't slow enough for the entrance to 10. i go off on the outside and have to go all the way along the outside bouncing and jumping in the dirt and ruts. i hear the oil pan skid shield slamming into the ground. back on the track, and now the diasio is easily past, plus franza and whitaker are gone. like about a full straightaway gone. crap. i continue around for the rest of the race, passing lap traffic left and right. franze breaks down, but i can't get back up to whitaker. he's too fast, and makes no mistakes. where's the full course yellow when you need it!!!!

i finish the race, mostly bummed out. then i think about it for a while, and decide its not so bad. i f#$%ed up, but the car is still running well, and i turned a 1:06.7. respectable.

can't wait for summit point race; i'm getting a little better driving this thing, and if it ever gets at all sorted out, i think i can give the front runners a scare. maybe. if the axles hold!

sundays enduro, we have the slowest car by far. our plan is keep going around and hope for attrition. i drive last, with the less experienced drivers going first. that way, i will deal with the car at its worst, and they will get its best. the car runs perfect without a hiccup. only two probs; we started with fairly lousy tires; by 1:20 into the race, the left rear has a hint of cord. and the brakes are getting soft. i get in with 1 hour to go; tire has a hint of steel showing thru. brakes on the floor. my codrivers want to bleed the brakes and change one tire. i say "no way" and jump in. doing everything i can, the car will circulate at 1:18s. very dicey 1:18s. it holds together to the end. we pack it up and drive home. 7 hours for me

oh, and the fastest car in our E2 group, a RX-7, blows up. so we didn't finish last! a E2 Miata crushes us; about 7 laps up at the finish

good time, and good practice for the EMRA Summit Point enduro coming up!!!

see ya at summit soon!
