Okay, this is a pretty general question, but I'll try to answer it.

The main difference between all the transmissions out there for B-series Hondas are the gear ratios. For example, in a LS transmission, the ratios allow you to be at a higher speed, but a lower rpm. On a B16A (Civic Si), Type R, or GSR transmission, you will be at the same speed, but at a higher RPM.

There is more "mechanical advantage" on a transmission such as the B16A, GSR (B18C1), or Type R (B18C5) over the LS (B18B1) one. The car will need less force to move the transmission/spin the wheels. It will seem as the car will accelerate faster, even though the power production is the same.

A hydo tranny, or a hydraulic tranny is just that. It is actuated by a hydraulic line instead of a cable tranny. In that case, a cable lets it change gears. The newer B-series transmissions are always going to be hydraulic.

A LSD is a limited slip differential. It is a piece that goes in the transmission (stock in some) that provides power to both wheels instead of one. I won't get into too much detail with this, but remember, it's "limited" not a full non-slip differential, which is different.

Most stock transmissions do NOT have an LSD.

Check out http://www.bseries.net for some B-series transmission information such as gear ratios, etc.

No problem. The Integra Type R (B18B5 motor/tranny) and the Civic Si (B16A motor/tranny) are similar in the fact that they have shorter gearing. And now that I am looking up the specs of them...wow, they are in fact the same. I never knew that.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The difference is that the B16A tranny does NOT come with a factory installed LSD like the B18C5 one. Outside the USA, there is a tranny with the B16A1 motor that comes with an OPTIONAL factory LSD. We don't have that option here in the USA. Also the final drive on that one is 4.266, which is the same as an LS transmission.

Well, you have to remember that I am talking about the USDM (United States Domestic Market) Type R. That has a 4.400 final drive, whereas the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) has a 4.785 final drive. They both have LSDs as well.

Most people like, or are geared (no pun intended ) to buying transmissions with shorter gearing. This way, you get the maximum mechanical advantage. The downside is that those transmissions are generally more expensive. Also depending on the purpose of your car, a shorter geared transmission might not always be what you want. So you gotta see what your goal is.

Note that (and I won't get into details) you can change gear ratios/final drives by modifying the transmission. I did that in my LS tranny. It has long gears, but I put a Type R LSD in it, requiring me to change my final drive from 4.266 to 4.400. This changed everything just a bit.

Good choice. Many people use GSR transmissions for their LS. And if you ever want to later on, an OEM Honda LSD will go right in there without any modification to your gearing/final drive.

Good luck

hehe...

ok, just had to say it.....

OK, ANDYLAUIII, hehe..... nice original name why not EKINCHENG, or SAMHUI, or JACKIECHAN.......

hehe... anyway....

while you're at it, why not look for a JDM 98spec ITR tranny...

it has the 4.7 final gear and LSD, which would top the US spec ITR and GSR trannies.
