Anyways, a few weeks ago I stuffed some steel wool into my "unbaffled" oil catch can, with the idea that the steel wool would help filter out the blow by gases. Much to my surprise my car feels like it is running a lot smoother and healthier. My car burns a lot of oil and blow by levels are pretty bad, so I'm assuming that the wool is helping with keeping my combustion a bit more efficient, although my rings are still shot..... Just thought I'd share this with you guys; anybody else experience anything like this?

definitely; there's a meet/track day out at Infineon Raceway next weekend but i'm not gonna make it anymore. We should set something up like a BBQ before Winter comes...

 

I was always concerned of little metal flakes getting in the engine since most steel wool is so...flakey.

I guess it works fine?!?

 

I was concerned about the same thing but the steel wool method is widely recommended so I gave it a shot. Even C-speedracing.com suggests to use it too.

Car felt a lot better, so I guess nothing bad can be happening....

It's probably fine. It's the right consistency, you just gotta make sure it won't come apart.

I'm running the tiny Jaz plastic thing so I'd have to drill the top just to fit in the little pieces. I catch about a tablespoon a month

 

doesnt the cusco can come with steel wool?

 

How much did the catch can cost you for the parts and install?

I gotta try something, the car is just using too much oil...

I'm not sure...according to the cspeed article they had to add it....

I'm using a generic arospeed oil catch can that's unbaffled. It was only ~30.00 dollars and you just install it yourself; just gotta find a good location. I found a mounting point in between my coolant overflow reservoir and intake but the catch isn't mounted completely upright. I picked up a small hawker battery that's going to free up some space on the firewall and that's where i'm going to mount it now.

 

If you are worried about the degriadation (sp?) then why not try..

For those who can't work them out (there may be some!! ) They are house metal scrubbers, made out of stainless steel.

how do you have your catch can setup? if you're already have oil consumption due to bad seals, catch can won't help with that.. but its still good to run..

i always though baffled is when you want to run from valve cover to catch can then inside intake.. i just run it open. then another setup would be from pcv valve to unbaffled catch can with no breather and to IM. - what i have.

go to Jegs and find the small Jaz catch can (not the big one). It's like $45 and I glued (my favorite donkey snot, GE Silicone II) a deer park water bottle cap on top of it

I like the Jaz because it's small, black, and fits on the passenger side electronics bracket (zip ties) then I can just drain the contents out of the bottom via the nozzle.

 

i know this is a year old but what grit steel wool did you guys use?

steel wool is not that great idea, since it can go into your engine little by little....

 

As mentioned above, use stainless steel scrubbers instead....

these wont flake like the steel wool?

 

less chance it will.

others have used a "ball/chain" setup....take a look at a table lamp or any type of home fixture that requires you to pull on a ball and chain link to turn the light on/off.

Or it can also be found on army dogtags.

 

anyone know if theses are cool? will these flake?

Are you running a drain-back line to the intake or block passage?

I could see a possible advantage if you are running a closed system that basically places the catch can inside the stock system - like Endyn does it. If you aren't then there will be no benefit to putting any sort of baffle in the can.
