Default a question for those who have driven an r and a evo and or sti

can you tell me if i would get similar performance from these two vehicles. I am thinking about selling the R and when my lease ends on my 03 si(in june of 06) getting the 07 sti or evo. I just want to make sure I get the same great handling.
thanks for all who give me there 2 cents.

Sti and Evo are in a class above the ITR. That being said, they are different beasts entirely.

While the Evo outpaces the Sti in most cases, I'd personally go for the Subaru. To me the build quality is a lot better (for example, the rusting subframes some Evo owners were finding). You could also probably find the Sti a couple grand cheaper depending where you shop.

im not entirely sure. have you driven evo or sti tweakmiester?

i think it breaks down to what you want.

imo, i driven the STI, and...

1) I dont like the shifter, even driving casually on the road, i was somewhat scared of misshifting...but its better than a base wrx.

2) two, in its stock form, it did not handle on rails like the itr does. it feels kinda sloppy, probably because of the soft spring rates/heavy chassis. it definately takes some getting used to. im sure after you get used to the body roll, you could potentially go faster.

3) brakes....see #2 for reasoning. I didnt have a problem on the street, but on the track, im sure there would be problems, unless i upgaded the stock pads. (but this would probably take care of the issue)

4) I have yet to drive on the track with STI or EVO, but from the feedback i've received from other owners who do track their cars...they feel like "stoplight assassins" on the track (which, makes me believe that the ITR's "funfactor" just isnt there)

now, if you are going to use it for the track, i'd say go ITR all the way.

However, if this is your "Casual" car, then I would suggest getting the STI or EVO. its more "urban" friendly. 4 doors, comfy surroundings, very urban inside.

i have driven all 3 cars. I owned a R, while I have friends who an Evo and STI. There are pluses and minuses to each of these cars. The Evo felt the most similiar to the R in the race feel but it still wasn't there. I have yet to be really impressed with the STI. Yes its fast but its handling is like SUPER above the ITR. Yes it is better but not by much. I'd stick to the R if you need that race car feel. If not, go with the evo.

umm....noo

The sti is stock faster then the evo....ok maybe in auto-x the evo's better but then again with the sti's ability to change where the power is put down (Front or Back) that would get rid of over steer and under steer wouldn't it???....anyway the sti was a great car to drive....but like someone else said i was really affraid of misshifting....plus the evo's motor is what like 10 yrs old....just put bells and whistles to look nice....

save your money get a AWD eagle talon.....for like $1600....same motor as the evo a fraction of the price....

all you gotta know is that both of those cars can be absolutely sick with very little done to them. you can pick up like 50lbs at the wheels just by changing the timing with a utec or reflash. its ridiculous.

something like this is where my input was coming from. Stock for stock the ITR is very nice, but once you start putting things on and dialing these cars in, the Sti or Evo are in a league above IMHO.

EVO all the way! The Type R is great, but ultimately limited by its FWD if you wanted more power and handling. The STi is just not in the same league in my opinion... handling is sloppy compared to the other two.

If you want supercar performance + limitless potential, go EVO.

better blame that on bad driving.....i beat an evo before....im not saying that cause im fast im saying that cause he just couldn't drive......

sti's cost more for a reason....hell what magazine did you read where an sti is slower stock???

Ohhhh, so that's why they are voiding their warranties if you actually drive the car like it was made to be driven.

check the the magazines that reviewed the evo and sti when they both came out or i think it was when the sti came out. There were bone stock evos running at englishtown throwing down 12.7s one of then actually hit 12.6. The two stis that i saw were no better than 13.0 12.9s

From what I've seen the Evo is faster (when tested by magazines, etc.) but the build quality isn't there. Mitsubishi has so many horror stories.

That's why I'd go with the Sti.

I own a 2000 Type R and a 2004 Evo RS. They both dare you to break the speed limit. They both demand your attention to steering constantly. They both bring a smile to my face in every situation but traffic.

The Evo is faster. The Evo makes the R seem comfy and quiet. The Evo makes the R chassis feel flexible. The Evo brakes make the R brakes feel spongey. The Evo's oil is easier to change.

The R build quality makes the Evo seem like it was assembled with sledgehammers and paste. The R engine makes the Evo seem like it has a loose connecting rod. The R shiter makes the Evo's seem like a bucket of gravel. The R feels 1000 pounds lighter rather than 400.

These are both polarizing, exciting cars in their own ways. I would not trade either one for their original list price. I am now spoiled for other performance cars. For my next car purchase I am only thinking about a tow vehicle, an Elise or a Z06.

-regards,
Alan

thanks for all the replies. the worst thing about replacing an R is getting the same performance without spending $50,000 plus
I will keep what ever i get stock so the tuning potential is not that important. two posts said the shifter on the sti is sloppy. i noticed on the subi web site that there is a factory short shifter

I wonder if this solves that problem? anyway if I dont get at least $21,000 for the R then I will keep it and pay the insurance tell 06 when my si lease is up. I will try to sell the si first but there resale in not that good. thanks again all.

Thats easy, cuz they can. Just like with the Subaru's, people blow the whole "voided warranty" thing out of proportion. Warranties are protected by law, believe it or not and there are dealerships who actually will abide by them. The EVO has proven quite reliable for over 10 years.

The EVO is not your typical Mitsubishi. Subaru of America is junk... and the dealers are even worse. I havent seen issues with build quality on the EVO, just one of the greatest cars we've ever gotten in the US. Its better than a Honda's spot welded chassis that seemingly wants to rip apart.

I think you might want to read up on the EVO's transmission issues and the strength of the US spec STI's short block before making any decisisons.

Being able to beat on a car day after day can mean a lot more than how fast it is.

< is not saying the EVO or STI is unreliable, but reading up would be advised.

Id go for the Evo. Ive driven Evo 2, 5, and 7, and in the other hand WRX STi, just WRX and GT (turbo 210hp) and Evo is much much better. Of course, R is not as fast as these beasts, but if well driven, it can manage to be just behind Evo and STi
