Default Test drove an R yesterday some things seemed odd......

Yea me and a buddy of mine(imasianman here on HT) test drove an R that a guy was selling localy by himself. It was the PY one and he said it was never stolen/crashed. A couple things seemed odd to me but im not sure if they are in every R or not. The Interior light adjustment **** did not light up amber in color, infact it was the stock integra white/light green color. Another thing, the guage cluster didnt have TYPE R written in it, i though the usdm one had it written in the MPH or the RPM side. The last thing that seemed off was that the passanger air vent wasnt outlined in "carbon fiber" style material. It was vibrating when i went about 5/6 k RPMs and only had about 50 K on it. For some reason he was selling it for dirt cheap, 15 k for an 00 type R.
It had some problems though, didnt seem genuine...
Peace

The rear tie bar bracket under the car is welded on, and the cylinder head stamp should be PR3-4. The vins on the block, and trans should also match up, and 00-01 should the vin etched into all the windows.

Easiest way to tell is the VIN, if the title says it then thats what it is.

All of this can be faked, and I've seen it done.

There is no 'Type R' label in the clusters. If you are referring to the interior light dimmer **** to the right of the steering wheel, it does not light up - it is just a white painted on icon. Vibrations in the dash are common on R's at/above 50k miles.

It could be cheaper than some for wear reasons. Worn tires, brake pads/rotors, shocks, etc. Also 50K cars will go less than 25-40k mi cars.

Check the stuff others have posted. Head code, matching VIN's on drivers door jamb, drivers dash, motor, tranny, and firewall. B18C5 engraved in block, LSD stamp on the tranny. Also matching VIN stickers on the inside edges of the rear hatch, and on the inside edges of the doors, and maybe on the inside of the hood. Yellow dipstick end. Especially welded on lower rear tie bar mountings, and the whole rear cross member area looking 'factory'. Or get under there and take some pics of all this and post them up.

The the rear subframe where the lower control arms bolt up is also flat across, where the regular Integra's have dimples where the swaybar brackets are mounted... that is probably the easiest method to tell if it is a real R. Only some retarded people would go through the time and effort to change that.

My dipstick end is orange. Also the R's dont say Type R any where on the guage cluster, and its got a carbon fiber look trim around the guages.

just make sure VIN matches from engine to all the stickers on the door/hood/hatch/fender/etc. if you see a fender or something w/o VIN sticker on a honda logo background, it could mean it was involved in accident. and if you don't see that VIN sticker on that part of car, it means not factory/OEM part

I don't recall the VIN being etched on the glass of my 2000. Maybe a dealership thing? I know my idiot brother paid extra to have the VIN etched on his 4Runner glass.

Actually, factory replacement parts will not have VIN stickers. Missing VIN stickers on parts can either mean 1) repaint 2) replaced (e.g. accident, theft recovery) 3) stolen.

Good point. My OEM replacement hatch did not have any stickers at all like the factory one did.

Look closely, its possible that there is some exception, but they are very faint etchings.

I would check, but I sold the car two years ago

Perhaps some (bored) owner will provide us with a pic. Not calling you out by any means, I just think that would have been something I would have noticed when I owned 00-0009.

Your brother actually may not have been as foolish as you think. We opted for the "window etching" on our '99 Civic Si, and I think it cost us a couple of hundred dollars. Last year, the car was stolen, and since it wasn't recovered within a 30 day period, we received a $5000 payment from the company that handles the etching. Apparently, the etching included a supplemental "insurance" policy, so in our case, it turned out to be an extremely good investment.
