98 Accord another valve lash question
Again, I'm new to Hondas and was surprised to see that the service manual requires valve lash adjustments every 15000 miles. I have read a lot of the archived material which was very helpful and will use it when it comes time to do it. But I have two questions:
1. I just registered on the Honda Owner Link site. I went thru some of the maintenance schedules and there is nothing in there about checking valve lash. Does it really need to be done so often? I hear no noise from the valve train and the car runs perfectly--has 87,000 miles on it.
2. I've done mechanical work before--exhaust system, brakes, carb rebuilds, rear end rebuild--but I've never worked on the motor or tranny (other than replacing a valve body). Should I attempt the valve lash adjustment on my own or get someone over who knows what they're doing to help?
I have a bunch more questions, but I'll try to spread them out. Most of them are dumb newbie ones!
Just sold my 5.0 yesterday--after driving the Accord, driving that thing is like being in a loud tank. I love the Accord. Don't tell anyone over in Corral, though!

Valve lash adjustment isn't too hard compared to that other stuff you mentioned. If you're gonna work on your car get a book from http://www.helminc.com - their repair books are so much better than Chilton/Haynes.

As far as required I really don't know. My Haynes service manual for my 96 suggest it. On something like that man, as painless as it is to do I say go for it. If anything its going to help your gas mileage. I had mine done in 15 minutes or so.
Actually just checked the Helms...
They say every year or 12k miles. This is for the 94 Accord EX but they're all the same darn thing.

Thanks. I will probably go ahead with it.
Q--on a 98- 4 cyl. auto, can you turn the crank with the tranny in neutral?
Schmittey: The manuals look interesting, but which one is comparable to the regular repair manual--it looked like owner's manuals or service training manuals to me.
Thanks again.

You can turn the crank with the tranny in neutral or park. Park locks the axles so you don't have to worry about the car rolling away... Remove all 4 spark plugs & you can probably grab the front pulley & turn it by hand. Only turn the engine forward (counterclockwise at the pulleys). I don't know about Ford V8s, but here there's a chance of the cam timing skipping if you turn it backwards.
You can also buy owner's manuals there. But the repair manuals are under 'service & owner info', then 'shop/service info'.

Haynes is your average repair manual, Helms is THE dealor repair manual. Helms is the real deal. Get one!!! Don't know how I ever worked on a car without one! They cost around $60 new or do what I did. Find the Adobe Acrobat files (do a search) and print off what you need. I love it cuz you don't have to worry about getting grease all over everything.
