bodywork question
a buddy of mines uncle owns a bodyshop,
i've seen his work, its pretty good.. not quite mobworks steez but good ****.
anyhoo,
he quoted me 1200 to paint the driver door(had a dent needing fixing) drivers rear 1/4 panel(more fix needing) and sand/polish the whole thing.
is that a fair price? I was hoping for a hooking as my buddy is family n ****,
definetely doesnt seem like a ripoff or anything, but I duno, alittle more than I bargained for.
whaddya think?
edit: NOT replacement of 1/4panel, just repainting it
door is just a small dent and some scratch, repaint also.

Let me give u an EXAMPLE estimate
Repair and repaint door and quarter panel = 700
Buff complete car = 150
Thats just a a good guess, i would have to see the damage to the car. But this is assuming we are talking bout some dents. not needing a new quarter panel or door shell
for about 1400 u could get ur dents fixed and your WHOLE care painted the same color, and u would go
at the quality of it.
Those are estimates i would give to any joe coming off the street

wow,
ok definetely NOT replacing any panels,
I have a door ding in my door(prettybad door ding) about a golfball in size, though you can see distortion in the size of a baseball
on the 1/4 panel, the car came with glued on moldings that I removed, but that spot had way too much glue, it'll rip the paint off to get it off, so i want that removed/repainted, but he said he has to do the entire panel cuz blending wont look right.
and then also entire car buffed/polished.
he said 700 for just the rear 1/4panel and sand/polish(he kept saying sand/polish.. so i duno ,maybe that meant wetsanding?)

well door skins i used to think they had to be welded on.. wel i was wrong.. they are welded on stock but when you buy replacements there is a method toputting them on without welding. i actually learned something from hotrod tv. haha. but its usally cheaper and easier to just buy a used door

Every shop has there different price ranges, based off the products they use, overhead, and all that mumbo jumbo. So just look around and get the best price. But 1200 for 2 panels, and they can be repaired, not replaced?? Man for that price his work better be faaaaaaaaaaaaar more superior than MOB

sorry if i dont like bondo on my car and like **** done right.. usally if theres 1/4 panel damage you cant pull the dent out fully and bondo or bodyfiller has to be used.
i just stated the fact thata door skin is actually something that can be done yourself and if he wanted to its not as hard as people make it out to be

Thats coo everybody has there way or preference of how they want to do things, i can respect that. But i would tell a customer its freakin silly to replace a panel for a golf sized dent, and another one for some glue on it. But if they insist now i have to decide between do i take this persons money and do a whole bunch of work that doesnt need to be done and slow up the shops progress, or do i tell the next man to do it, because im not gonna rip them off
*but thats another story*
If done right, a body man can get the dent near perfect and just uses the bondo/body filler to smooth out any imperfections. I think a tiny bit of bondo wont hurt you, because if its done RIGHT it wont ever come back to haunt you or cross your mind. Used to have a bad perception of bondo, until i saw it used right everyday

a'aight, guess i have to shop around then.
cuz i cant afford to pay 1200 for that anyhoo.
might have a paintless dentrepair place pull my dents for me,
and just say fuckit.
note to drunknbass, plz read what I post,
I said nothing about there being a dent in the 1/4panel,
its glue that needs to be removed.
there is a dent in the door, but its small enough replacing the panel would be ludicrous
thnx 4 the input though.

i agree with you.. if its a simple dent yea.. pull it out and get out out tool and work it as smooth as you can.. but stuff like the wheel well where it has the lip/flare.. most that have damage on that area looks like a wadded up ball of tin foil..
and its true a good bodyshop can usally smooth dents out.. but when they are so major that the labor is equal to replacing that panel id choose the latter.

hey... everybody get back on topic!
price is a little on the high side... if you dig up newman's old post, he was getting outside only paint jobs for $600-$800 and it was clear coated ppg paint. Now thats a hook up. Either shop around more or get it done if you can justify spending that amount.
