ays, Help Vtec engagement?

Hi im new here, anyways i recently bought a 94 gsr converted to a 98 and up model. I notice the vtec engages at around 5500 rpm. I thought it was suppose to engage at 4400 rpm? The car is pretty much stock, all it has is an intake. Anyone know why it might be engaging at 5500 rpm? Thanks

As tngay stated, what you're hearing around 5500 RPM isn't VTEC engaging, it is the secondary runners in your IM opening. The sound of the runners opening on a GS-R is typically much more noticeable than the sound of VTEC switching over at ~4400 RPM.

dont forget gsr's are dual stage vtec, unlike Si, it engages at 4400rpm and the secondary butterfly which is a lot louder and more powerfull engages are 5500-5800rpm

uh no BOY it engages at 4400 and 2ndary butterflies open at 5750.
people cant hear vtec engage usally so they alway think that secondary butterflies is the vtec engaging
4400 - Vtec
5750 (according to Helms) - Secondary Butterflies (NOT VTEC, not a second stage of VTEC, nothing like that)

imo mods should've deleted this after a quick answer to the question or deleted this thread right away cuz it's been beaten to death or delete it after a response to this.

My car is wierd. I have a JDM GSR motor so VTEC cross's over at 4600 and I distintively hear a big change in the noise (VTEC led goes on too) but I dont hear the secondaries opening at all...ever

my vtec engages at 5100 ... oh wait, nvm
Seriously, though, b18c1's have the VTEC engagement at 4400 rpm, short-runner intake manifold butterflies open at 5700ish. Like said before, the engagement at 5700 IS NOT a 2nd stage of vtec, it's just the intake manifold "changing" the runner length to keep the air velocity high in the higher rpms. Prior to that, the air takes the other path to keep the velocity up at low rpm to help with low-end torque and midrange power.
