Default My Trusty Tach (Seach Found No Answer)

I am having some problems with my Si cluster tach. When the car is on the tach reads 0rpm. when im going 10mph in first the tach reads 0rpm. when i shift to second the tach will jump to about 2500 then go back to zero. Just about all city driving the tach reads from 0-1000. On the highway in 5th going 55 it reads over 5000.

Does anybody have any idea whats wrong with my tach? It just started doing this yesterday.

Edit: so today I go on my lunch break and its working fine Could it just be getting stuck sometimes?

either the disty is going bad and not sending a signal to the tach or the tach itself is going bad.

I doubt its the alt. because everything else works fine, its probably either the dizzy coil or the tac. Im leaning more towards dizzy coil, maybe it needs cleaning?

More than likely Its the Ignitor. Most of the time when the Tach Bounces or acts Funny like that thats what is is. You can check the coil With a Voltmeter, but i really dont think its that. Also have the car tested to see what the Alt is putting out, Just to be on the safe side. If both Check out replace the Ignitor or buy a New distributor.

on my old 88si the tach took a dump on me it started reading bogus rpms I ripped apart the dizzy had the alternator checked and all was good. Finally ripped apart the gauge cluster and it turned out to be just the tach.

I know at Advance., they want 90 bucks for one. Most of the time its better just to buy a new dizzy. Since even they sell a new one for about 140. Not including core charge.

Retail markup.
There is probably no afermarket company producing these.
When there are parts like that, the reatail stores buy direct from Honda and charger you a little extra over Honda's price.

At the Honda dealership http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ it runs at $75.

I think like another 45 dollors. Good thing is tho, All they want back is the frame. You can take out all the electronics. So you can give them a DX distributor for all they care. Thats what i did. Plus youll have a extra coil.

I Know GP Sorenson Calms to make them. But hell I would rather buy a Honda one so Nice find on that.
But truthfully. For the price Diference Youre better off with a new Distributor just becuase. We all know how the bearings like to go Without warning.
